Default first trip out later at actually trying to catch

My mate wants to go pike fishing later so i said i would go along and fish further up for perch on the fly .. Anyway the leaders i have don't really look very good quality at all so i'm a bit reluctant to use them so have tied a couple of homemade ones till i get to the tackle shop, i was wondering if these sound ok

perch,,,, using a size 10 beadhead lure, 5 foot of 20lb amnesia surgions knot each end , i will tip it with around 2 foot of 5-6lb mono..

I may have a crack on a dry fly just for the hell of it

dry fly,,,,,,, 5 foot of 20lb amnesia , 3 foot of 6 lb mono terminated in a surgions knot and i will tip it with 1-2 foot of line depending on size of fly..

Could do with a middle step down.... i.e. 20lb, 12lb then 6lb in 5ft 4ft 3ft respectively. but you have got the general principle. Perch will normally be a foot or so above the bottom, so use quite a heavy (but small) fly with a bit of gold or silver in it and retrieve it near the bottom.

Forget the 20lb and just go with either straight 6lb or 6lb then 3lb.

won't that snap the line when casting ? i need to be getting around 40 foot ish as i'm going to have to cast down the canal at an angle as i won't be able to cast straight across as there's high bushes literally a couple of foot behind.

i thought the higher breaking strain was to aid turnover but also as a shock leader type thing.. ( i know i dont need to worry about turnover really lobbing a lure across)

Nope. And there is no shock leader effect in fly fishing, unless you use power gum to allow you to fish with very fine leaders.

right , thought there was .. so in effect ( not that i will) i could use a 2 foot bit of line off the main line with a small fly and it shouldn't snap whilst casting as long as the cast is good..

so with that the leader is about getting some distance between the highly visible main line and the business end with the tippits being about presentation

looking at my main line #5 i could get away with say 10-15lb mono as butt sections as long as the mono was some bit like the same diameter or slightly thinner ?

If you chose to use a 2' leader then you probably would crack it off on a weighted fly but a small fly would be ok
But I would just fish 9' of 5lb On a 9' rod as a starter, this should cause no problems with a bead head lure. You seem to believe you 'must' have a tapered leader. Not so.especially when fishing weighted flies. but I would advise a hat and eye protection.
