Default Sharpening a pocket knife

To add to the pocket knife thread .
I wondered what you use to put an edge on your blade to make it
" AS SHARP AS THE MOTHER IN LAWS TONGUE."
I have one of those (Blade Tec) sharpeners works well on most blades, but I have a few old knives which i still use wet stones on.

Arkansas stone.

Quickie ceramic sharpeners do an ok job, but you just can't beat a decent wet stone, especially a fine Arkansas stone.

progressive grades of stones, coarse if needed through to super duper fine

a bit of maintenance inbetween times with both sides of a strop (canvas then leather) really reduces how often they need to go on the stones

looked up that blade tec sharpener - if it works how I think it does I wouldn't put it anywhere near a quality blade! Just MHO

I have various 'sharpening' tools, they can be 'bluntening' tools if not used correctly. Try the kitchen steel first if you have one

the blade tec cutting edges are carbon steel you draw the blade through them and it removes a fine slither of blade with each pass.
I once saw a woman demonstrating it at a country show .
she was using an opinel its blade was so jagged it looked more like a serrated edge.
due to using to much pressure which made the knife blade "chatter".
if used on a stainless blade it will come up well enough to remove the hairs on my arm.

Arkansas stones in various grades to sharpen and then kitchen steel to maintain. Something soothing about sharpening a knife on a series of stones.

Bladetech carbide blade sharpener..................brilliant little tool. I use it on all my chefs knives, scissors, prunners etc. Only does straight edged blades though. A couple of gentle wipes down the blade and hey presto................birdsnest
