Default River Derwent

Hi im from Edinburgh but I head down to gateshead to visit my bro as he's moved there with his goerdie girlfriend ( lovely lass by the way) lol. Anyway theres a river close to his house but ive never had the chance to have a wee look at it, would this be the river derwent and where would it be possible for me to get a permit for a days fly fishing, also being scottish a rod liscence isnt required up here yet would this make it possible for me to purchase a temporary rod liscence or is a year minimum.

Thanks in advance.

Stu.

It might be the derwent. If it is check out Derwent Angling Association and Axwell Park and Derwent Valley Angling Association
You should be able to get a rod license for 1 day at a post office.

Welcome to Geordie Land.
The River Derwent is a wonderful trout river where wild and a few stocked brownies thrive. The two clubs mentioned earlier have the fishing rights for the whole river from the Derwent Reservoir downstream to Swalwell and day tickets are easy to come by from both Clubs.
To save you a bit of money in the long run, buy an EA Full Year Licence for 2011-2012 and go fishing on the Derwent as much as you can.

Stu,

It will be the Derwent if he lives in the Whickham/Swalwell or Blaydon/Winlaton areas of Gateshead. The only other river (besides the Tyne estuary) in Gateshead is the Team, which runs out at Dunston.

There's a load of info regarding the Derwent, and the fishing on it so far this season, on this thread in the Trout & Grayling Section. Some of it might be of use to you if you come to fish the river.

At this moment in time, an assortment of wet flies and nymphs will give sport on the Derwent during the day, the GRHE, PTN and BWO being the pick. Dries work well in the evening - grey dusters, BWO (early) and sherry spinner (later on) or sedges, depending on whats hatching. If this is your preference, you can worm fish using 'coarse' tackle on Axwell Park waters in Derwenthaugh Park (Winlaton Mill) and Derwent Park (Rowlands Gill), but Derwent Angling Association specify that you can only worm fish using fly tackle.

Tight Lines,

Im a fly fisherman man and a dry fly man at that, so evenings sound like a good shout. Now for the excuse to go fishing when am down there a good arguement about my dinner being cold with the missus usually buys me a few hours fishing when she throws me out lol maybe I could tell my bro he's picking up the accent but that could end me up in hospital lol
