Default Pocket knife - an anglers essential tool?

I have carried a compact Swiss Army Knife for longer than I care to remember...if I don't have my SAK with me, I somehow feel naked without it and more to the point, there's a good chance I can't get into my home as my keys are always on the keyring!

It aalso travels with me whenever I go abroad or on holiday -they are such a useful bit of kit to have with you but one which can also get you into trouble at the airport these days if you accidently forget to put it in your 'hold luggage' before boarding a plane which I found to my cost last year when my long serving and much loved SWK was confiscated by the airport authorities at Pisa airport after I stupidly left mine in my camera bag - it sort of ruined what was the perfect holiday for me!
My new SAK has even more tools than the old one but the old one was so smooth and worn and felt part of me but the new one doesn't have the same feel somehow! Maybe after having it twenty years, I'll feel the same about it!

When I was young, like many other anglers of my generation, I had one of those multi-tool camping/hunting/fishing sheath knives ( or a large folding pocket knife with similar tools) in my fishing kit and I find that since taking up fishing once again, my SAK is definitely indispensible. Those razor sharp scissors are just great!

So, how many of you carry a pocket knife when you go fishing/camping or, which tools do you keep in your pocket or bag that you just wouldn't be without at the water side?

Tony

I own a SAK but I don't find that I need a knife when fishing so it gathers dust at home. I fish light and the only tool that I have with me is a pair of forceps to crush hook barbs and remove flies.

I carry a Schrade "old timer" pocket knife. I always have it with me. It has the best steel blade I have ever come across...

Normally have a Victorinox Spartan in my pocket (used mainly for slicing chorizo or salmi etc) along with a Byrd Wings for the tougher stuff, if I am walking in some distance, will have my Linder Trapper and if overnighting with Bivi will also have my Wetterling Small Forest Axe.

I've got one of these also. One of the very old model high carbon blades where over the years the blades have blackened. Like you say one of the best blades I've come across and an easy one to sharpen. It's normally in my pocket whenever I'm outdoors but for a standard fishing tool I've got the smallest size SAK attached to a zinger on my vest. I find the sissors more useful than a pair of nippers and I like having the option of the tiny knife blade if I decide to keep a fish and want to clean it. The tweezers can also come in handy for wind knots and have pulled many a thorn or splinter from my hands!

Take care

Terry

When I was a boy, we all had knives for fishing, in full knowledge of our parents. It simply would not have occurred to us to use them as weapons to hurt or threaten others (though we probably shouldn't have spent so much time throwing them at trees).

Sorry but I prefer a fixed blade knife, such as Puma's Skinner, to any folding knife for fishing and shooting.
