This year very little in the way of 'PB's;' river flows just to darned high. But in all time PB's a 28 1/2 # winter run Steelhead (Sixes River/SW Oregon) and something out of the Rogue that was so heavy it 'pinned' a 35# scale with not much more than it's head out of the water.
The first, I was a 'young fool' and kept the fish; the second .. hopefully older and wiser ... Had the fish of a life time on the end of my spey rod (a King Salmon) and he'd damned near stripped me clean of 120' of fly line and 300 yards of backing.
Guide boat fishing above me pulls into the beach and asked "Would you like a ride?" HELL YES!
Took the better part of an hour to get my line back/fish along side the boat. And the 'Instant Guide' asked me what I wanted to do with the fish?'
"Cut him loose, something that big needs to be in the Gene Pool." Other guys in the boat (his actual clients) gave me a round of applause and Hazadds; one actually slapped me on the back so hard I damned near went over-board. Two others grabbed me and kept me from taking a swim.
It was a good day forever burned into an old foggies brain. The fish did right, the Guide did right, and I think I did right. And maybe the spawn of that fish did right. I hope so.
