Default Moving to Cheltenham - little advice....

Good evening chaps,

I found out today that I will be relocating to Cheltenham for a new job that begins on the 1st of September.

I have never been to Cheltenham or anywhere in the vicinity apart from the day I had my interview.

Am I in a good area to continue my fly fishing? Would anybody be able to give me some pointers as to appropriate locations/venues?

I really would be most grateful for any advice that anybody could pass on.

Many thanks in advance,

Matt

Alright Dave, you'll be about an hour away from Farmoor. Well worth a visit, when you come down south.

You could try sending Splashtestdummy a pm, he's aroundish that way. Jolly nice chap, should know of a place or two. Also I'm about an hour away, Oxfordshire, feel free to drop me a line. Always happy to meet new people, know a few spots round my way.

Hopefully someone closer will have more info. Offers there, hope this helps

Sean

Not a local so this needs to be updated by someone who is, but;

There's what looks very nice river trouting on some of the Cotswold limestone streams, the Colne, Cole and so on. From watching a couple of Hywel Morgan's TV shows, it's chalkstream style fishing for wild browns and grayling plus some stocked browns and rainbows. The tricky thing seems to be finding some on a day ticket or open syndicate basis, although Fishing Breaks do offer a beat....

A few options in the area and within easy driving distance.
Still waters are Churn Pool, Bushy and Lechlade, Watermark and a bit further Salford and Barnes Lakes. As for river fishing, there are day tickets available for the Coln at Coln St. Aldwyns (I guide there quite frequently and it can fish very well) and the Bull stretch at Fairford. Don't believe the 'Cotswold chalk stream' stuff... all our rivers flow over limestone round these parts, not unsurprisingly enough it's the same golden stone that all houses are built from.
There is also a small syndicate on the river Churn.
I'd recommend looking at the Cotswold Fly Fishers, PM me for more details.

Cheers

Andy

For stillwater fishing on the doorstep try here:

Witcombe Waters - ASGFM Member

or a little furthe afield BUT well worth the 1 hour drive are Bristol Water's Chew, Blagdon and Barrow Tanks

Bristol Water Fisheries

I have lived in the Cotswolds for most of my adult life and it truly is the "graveyard of ambition" cos you will not want to move away.

Hi,

You'll do well to look at Chrun pool near Cirencester (not summer though as closed from end of July).

I have only fished Salford (near chipping norton) once and absolutley loved it, had my first two fish ever on a dry, the fish don't seem to be very big but thats not the point for me. it's quite, there are two lakes and the water is gin clear.

Lechlade (bushyleaze) also Gin clear is o'k in summer but fishes better in the winter as in really well. having said that, there a few anglers that never seem to fail to catch anytime of year. The other lake (Lechlade lake) is where the really big browns and Rainbows are to be found, I think Browniebasher on here would a good fellow to ask about that.

Watermark up the road from Churn pool in South Cerney is also good but not my cup of tea (I wasn't built for floating casting platforms) they also have a stretch of river (churn I think but could be the colne)

The river Colne in Fairford, controlled by the Bull hotel adjacent the river is also supposed to be ok but I've been told that the public footpath alongside also means noisey people and dogs jumping in the river

Brook Farm is one of the nearest to you in Cheltenham but is syndicate only but the fishing sounds superb for big stillwater trout.

As posted above, there is also a small syndicate on the Churn outside Cirencester (Cheltenham side so quite handy), it is very much small stream type fishing but also very quite and absolutley private, part of it runs through a private estate, they also have a lake of humble proportions that is fishable from a small punt.

I hope this helps,

Chris

The Monnow Fisheries and Wye and Usk are easily doable from there. As well as SplashTest speak to Quicksilver or Tigermoth on the Monnow thread, they will see you right.

Sean - Anywhere worth chucking a fly into near Kidlington?
