Default usefull fly patterns for the River Nidd please

me and the family are staying at the Riverside Caravan Park Pateley Bridge for 5 days.Whilst there im planing on getting my line wet in the River Nidd

could any of you chaps recomend some flys i could tie that would come in handy whilst im patiently waiting for monday to come please.....?

also any other tips or areas i should be heading in would be gratefully recieved.

i believe the caravan site sell the day/week tickets for the Nidderdale Angling Club 7 mile stretch of river and this is were im planing to fish.

i am a bit of a novice when it comes to river fishing. iv fished a couple whilst away in the Dales with mixed success. due to my home Location we only have 2 easy to reach still waters(one of which i am a member)and no rivers with trout within an hours drive. so i spend all my time still water fishing

many thanks in advance

tight lines, minority

Hi Minority

Anglers are having success with the klink and dink method(New Zealand method)

A Klinkhammer on the point and a weighted nymph on a short dropper off the hook bend. A flashback nymph has been mentioned although I'm sure a GRHE nymph would work.If fish are rising a small black dry fly is always a good starter.

Hi minority,

There are two day ticket lenghts on the Nidd there is one right in front of the caravan park and one at Dacre Banks, there very clearly marked on the beat map you get when you buy a ticket. The pools leading upto the weir pool by the caravan park can be very good at times, especially the weir pool itself, after that if you walk up past the metal bridge up to the 1st metal gate , there are 3 to 4 pools of fast water, again these are worth a chuck. At Dacre you can fish down stream from the bridge by the tennis courts for the 1st 3 fields, there are fish all the way down the lenght. There is a good deep pool, look out for a big tree stump, there is usually some good fish in this pool, both Trout and Grayling. As noted above Klink and Dink work well, I normally fish a Olive Klink on the dropper and a sml Tungsten head PTN or Hares ear on the point, if there are rising fish, try a sml Grey pattern or F Fly.
Hope you enjoy your time on the Nidd, its a great little river.
Regards,
Gary.

Hi Minority

Having fished with Garyatwyffs on a number of occasions I can highly recommend his flies for use on the Nidd.

Hope you have a good time

Keep things simple, fish with a single fly at a time. If the river is low and there are gravel beds exposed, use them to sit on and keep low yourself. Last time I fished the Nidd was at this time of year and I used a Double Badger to coax the fish to rise throughout the day. It was much easier in the evening but still viable during the day.
