Default Cigarette Butts

I visited a stillwater fishery recently and was a little disappointed to find that some of the accessible casting points were littered with hundreds of cigarette butts. I don’t fish stillwater fisheries very often at all but I would hate to think this is the norm?

Once, when fishing with a guide on a river, the guide politely asked if he could smoke. I said sure, no problem but was horrified when he flicked his butt upstream into the river when he was finished. This was miles from anywhere and it seemed a shame to spoil a pristine environment with human waste.

What is it about a cigarette butt that leads some smokers to think that it does not constitute litter waste? Or, do they simply just not care?

If you smoke, what do you do with your cigarette butts when fishing?

The late great Richard Walker mentioned in one of his AT articles at tying for a fly he christened a Fagendicus or something of the like.

It was apparently quite effective on certain waters at certain times fished dry !

Lit or not I cannot remember ?

BTW Cigarette ends left to steep a month or so provide the most wonderful liquor that sprayed around greenhouse and garden deters to death just about any pest you could wish to deter especially greenfly.

Cigarette butts are toxic to fish. Toss one in the water and a trout swallows it it's dead. In a lab experiment a cigarette butt was was put into a tank of fish. It killed every one. There are four thousand chemical in cigarette smoke fifty are toxic.

Most if not all fisheries have notices up not to leave litter and monofilament behind so why leave cigarette butts? I once smoked myself. but never disposed of my butts indiscriminately!

The Alaska boys reckon it takes around 20 years for a filtertip to break down in that environment - so when there I smoke untipped !

'Leave only your footprints!' should be the way of it - but not easy for the addicted .

That's interesting to hear. Over the years I have found quite a few filter tips in trouts' stomach contents. They were obviously healthy and feeding right up to the time they were caught. Are you saying it is a long protracted affair, or maybe it needs to pass down into their colon before the toxins are absorbed???

I find the practice deplorable. Especially in damp conditions when it becomes almost impossible to pick up and smoke the damed things. They just won't light.

29weeks 4days free of the weed.

Maybe the fisheries should install ash trays or perhaps we could have non smoking fisheries
