Default general purpose homemade leader Q

I have some tapered leaders on the way ranging from 2lb to around 9lb .. They are LEEDA and not sure on quality yet as they are off the net. I had some with my kit but the butt ends are quite thick i would guestimate 30lb and don't look great quality so was wondering if it's worth making some.

I have 6 weight line but just got some 5 as the 6 seemed to need quite some grunt really with my 5/7 rod so was hoping the 5 may be a little easier on me ..not sure if the line weight makes any difference to the butt section of leaders .

would say 4 foot of 20lb then 4 foot of say 10lb be ok as a general leader ? obviously i would tie a tippit of a few foot to that. or should i scale the leader down ? . im only looking for a leader length of around 10 foot.

is the transition from 20 to 10 and then say 3 or 4 lb not smooth enough ?

hope that makes sense

Yes Leeda leaders are good quality and they have thick butts to transfer energy. If your stillwater fishing and just starting out their really is no need to over complicate things, here's a reliable dealer with leaders to suit all your stillwater needs ********13 tapered leaders £10 pick and mix style************

Hi Neil , making them wouldn't be a problem , i make all my own beachcasting /course rigs etc anyway..

just not sure re the best lb lines to use to ensure a good turnover really .. and whether the butts would need scaling down to use on a lighter line .. there's quite a significant difference between the 6 and 5 weight lines i have so wondered if a butt size for 6 weight would be too heavy for a 5 weight line ....

btw , got 18 leaders for £8 should of only got 8 but there was a cock up with order so bunged in some freebies which is always good

Hi again

Yes the butts may need scaling down, but most leader packets have a chart to show you how to do this.If you just chop off around a ft or so off the thick end of the leader it should be ok ( add at other end ) the butt section should be no thicker than the end of your fly line. Here's a link you may find useful if you still want to make your own up Dry Fly 'Expert': Leader linguistics, tippet talk and tips....

that's what got me thinking , as i say only concerned i get the drop in lb correct for the turnover.. i think making them would give many more options to tailor make them for specific situations.. it's a bit confusing , maybe im thinking too much about them .. in beachcasting there used as a shock leader but other way round to fly fishing with the thick end at the business end. and nothing to do with presentation of the landing

Hi again

Leeda and most shop bought leaders have a pretty steep taper, and like i said they have a chart that shows B/S as it progresses from thin to thick.Maybe it might be a good idea to wait until your leaders turn up and then you might have a better idea of things.I don't make my own but what i do is buy them longer than i need, then like i said i just cut them down ( butt end ) to suit the # of line I'm using
