Default right or wrong fly choice

is there a hard rule to the type of fly used on certain waters ?

for example if i was at a little still water lake would there be a certain fly i would use as in would it be a wet, dry etc or would it depend on whether fish are rising or not?

could i use droppers and fish wet under a dry fly and use the dry as an indicator and also as a depth control method ?

Im thinking of booking my first fishing venue trip here

No hard and fast rules though wise to check fishery rules.
As regards to flies and methods, depends on the fish, what they are feeding on and how they are feeding when you go.

ok cheers for that . so for instance i wouldn't get laughed at if i saw no movement on the water and decided to use wets and likewise wouldn't be thought a nutter using dries if there were rises ..

all new curve this for me ...

didn't want to look like my mate who thought 20lb pike gear was ok fishing a little waggler and size 18 hook with a huge knot

people may see me posting a lot but between this and reading a lot im getting there .. im not simply asking because i can't be bothered reading

It very much depends, I sometime fish dries when no rises are visible.
But sometime fish wets when there are lots of rises.

Its very much a process of trial and error...

The fish make the rules, you just have to decide what they are on that day

Yup

However, you will become more experienced at making a good judgement on that day.

Fished Oak Royal about six weeks ago with bill1. Stifingly hot day with no movement(Oak Royal is a tiny stillwater on a golf course) till later in the evening then the place was boiling with rises. Fished a team of three tiny dries and had good sport, but was back there for an evening casting session fairly recently when conditions couln't have been more different-cold, wet, windy and nothing rising. No one was fishing so I think that indicates what fishing there in those weather conditions is like and now with the warmer water temperatures it's probaly even more difficult-probably best left till things cool a bit. There are better waters around like Barnsfold where it wouldn't be so much affected by water temperatures, but there again Barnsfold can also be a difficult place to fish-it was last time I was there about three weeks ago-a real struggle yet my partner and I Did manage to catch while many others didn't!
