Question Best Fly?

Hi, I am new to this forum and was recommended to you by someone with the username FatOldGit, so my question is this, what, in your opinion would be the best fly to use when I go to the lake disctrict next week?

I have borrowed a rod and reel and a box of flies, most of the flies are dark coloured wet flies and nymphs and dry flies, but there are some larger flies with marabou feathers, things like the Cats Whisker fly.

I'm new to fly fishing and so do not have many ideas on what fly to use, but I have practised casting, I am getting quite good, I can make the line land straight most of the time.

Look forward to your opinions

Thanks in advance, James

Where are you going fishing, James?

Rivers, lakes, tarns, stocked fisheries?

Oh, welcome to the forum

Welcome to the Forum James. If you can be more specific where you intend to fish and a name of a river lake or fishery you will get loads of help here.

I am planning to fish more in a lake called Ullswater from our boat, which is stillwater obviously but I would probably try fishing in a couple of rivers.

thanks for the fast response

Hi Fishyjames
Even though you are fishing from a boat you're best fishing just off the bank in shallower water. I've always found deep water unproductiveThe trout in Ullswater are small. The best time for trout fishing ended in June and with hot weather in July and August trout often seek deeper water.Traditional loch style fishing is the most productive approach with the favoured drifts being over the shallower areas and close to the shoreline.Trout are free rising and you will pull them to the surface with a team of flies fished either traditional loch style or pulled through the surface wave with floating or intermediate lines. Regulars have their own preferences for flies but you won't go far wrong using standard loch style patterns. The trout are fairly willing and probably average just over half a pound but a fish or two around the pound mark is possibe.

John Norris at Penrith have a really good selection of flies if you are stuck.

Some lock style flies names are as follows
Mallard and Claret
Grouse and Green
Black Pennel
Silver Butcher
Soldier Palmer
Blae and Black
Perter Ross
Invicta
Kate McClaren
Teal and Silver.

If anyones fished Ullswater recently they will whittle this list down. Our Mr Trout can probably guide you there.

My advice to you would be to deny all knowledge of FatOldGit

Only kidding
Black Knight has given you a good list.

On the other hand you could strap on a budgie and strip for pike. That is a large weighted lure (lots of maribu) and pull it through the water rather like spinning.

Bibio..... dry then fished as a wet.

You may fair better fishing a team of three flies though.........

International size cat.
Kate Mclaren.
Bibio.

6ft apart if your ok with that.

Line choice is up to you on the day....... but sweep lines can be useful

Oh, and cover a lot of water until you find fish.

thanks to all of you, you have all been a great help, I will try to use some of these flies and fishing methods, although a pike may be a bit difficult, as a fly rod with 6 lb line may be a bit weak.

Thanks again,

James
