Default Request stories from ???

Ok folks its August and things are a bit slow at the moment.

So lets liven things up and request that each other describe about their best fishing days out.

True stories not fantasies please.

Anyone can chip in but I request that Steve Parton (counselor) to tell us about his best day out.
I think he caught three ten pounders in one day at Rutland so that may take some beating if he will tell all?

Captain Introna must also have some beautiful memory to share?

Who do you want to hear from ????

My best ever day out goes way back to August 1968 while I was home on leave in eastern Washington, a young 24 year old airman. My late father had a good friend who had his own private lake about 12 miles from Colville which was stocked with rainbows, browns and cutthroat trout of all sizes and he'd promised my dad that when I came back on leave I could fish it any time as long a I let him know when. So I took my fourteeen year old brother with me and we headed for the lake. Making sure we closed the cattle gate behind us we parked my old chevy up and walked to the shore of the lake. The lake was about two acres in a lovely wooded setting with large pine trees all round and wildlife every where, the banks a bit steep, but no problem to two young fit fellows like us. Brother Tracy decided to fish with the recommended bait-a miniature marshmallow/salmon egg sandwich, but I decided to try some of the dry flies I'd tied as it was a hot day with fish rising and looked promising. I'd only managed to cast out a short distance and was cursing my inability to cast very far when a large rainbow rose, took my fly and spat it out before I could react-about five feet from shore! Next I knew Tracy whooped and was into a big rainbow which ten minutes later he landed. In those days we weighed all our fish and returned only small fish. Tracy's first went just over four pounds. This time I cast the tiny size 16 black gnat about twenty yards and let it settle and was ready when a large trout engulfed it and was into a great fight. In three hours that afternoon we bagged up-eight trout each which was then the limit-a total weight of 73 pounds 14 ounces, best fish 6 and a half pound cutthroat taken by Tracy and smallest an eight inch brownie taken by me. But what a smashing day which I've never come close to beating and probaly never will. An average of nearly four and a half pounds per fish! The lake is still there, but the fellows son inherited it and he doesn't let anyone fish it-jammy devil keeps it all to himself!

Fifteen years ago I and my two sons fished the Annan in October. This had been a regular committment for years and we stayed in Ecclfechan. The first morning was cold and we had no luck in the first pool on the beat. Leaves were falling everywhere making fishing difficult. I fired up my portable gas stove for a brew and the two lads went on up the river. Level and colour was perfect which didn't always work out right for us. By the time I had a cup of hot tea in my hand I could see the lads coming back. They had a salmon in either hand and a large smile on their faces. "You'd better come now Dad" they said, "The next pool is full of fish." So I dropped everything and went back with them to a very large pool with a wier just below it. Over the next few hours we caught fish after fish until we were well into double figures. I have never had so many salmon in my life before. We stopped about 4pm and went back the following day.Again conditions were perfect but no salmon. They were there definately as occassionally you would see one or two move in the pool. By lunch time we'd still had no fish and were scratching our heads. The lads went off for a pub lunch but I stayed hoping for the next salmon. All of a suddend loads of weed floated down the river making it impossible to fish. Then the water level started to rise and change colour. Within two hours the river became a raging torrent with rain that had fallen overnight in the hills. We had to pack up and go home. Despite this bad end to the fishing trip it was one of the most productive and memorable I have ever had and one my sons and I will never forget.

Flytier07 and Black knight

Both great stories in there own way.
Just the sort of thing that cheers us all up and passes the 'dog days' of an English summer.

Its great to have such memories.

So who else has another great tale?

On my Iceland trip, i was just getting over having landed my best salmon ever 98cm which took me 500yards downstream, jumping over rocks and boulders while the fish ploughed on relentlessly.

I found myself at my favourite pool, here.

I landed a small grilse at the top of the pool, before puttting a heavy tube down the bottom half. one cast bounced off the cliff and landed an inch or two from the rock face. immediately the fly became stuck fast and i was convinced i had hooked the rock, until i saw the line, slowly, very slowly moving upstream! - I put a bit of pressure on and the fish shot upstream around the rocks you can see in the picture. I had to wade out and free her which was a nightmare in the fast water, but finally had my prize, a 94cm hen fish.

I was chuffed to bits with this fish, but kept at it and finally reached this tiny pool.

again, out went the fly and it swung under the overhanging bank. the line shot tight, and i confess i struck rather than letting the line go. no matter, as a bar of silver shot out of the water and crashed back. It was another very good fish! this one turned out of the tiny pool and headed back to sea down a very strong current. (remember i was fishing with a 7weight 9 footer) i ran after him sweating like god knows what.. finally more by fluke than skill we managed to bully him into the net when he was far from ready but it was a sea liced beauty of 88cm, again a hen.

THis was turning into a fantastic afternoon, but i had another pool to fish,

This is one of my favourite spots, as the river splits at the tail of the pool where there's a large rock. it always holds a fish or two if you can drift the fly properly! anyway, right on cue, next to the bend in the river, the line pulled slowly from my hand and i was in again! another good fish exploded out of the water before, you guessed it, heading over the lip of the pool and down! more running after it, and traversing the river while the fish fought like a madman downstream from me. the hook held again, and i finally landed another lovely fish of 86cm! that was it. 3 MSW salmon and a grilse from an intimate little river in a few hours - wonderful.

Who do you want to hear from ????
Ha ha....... I got loads!! One I seem to remember got me in some right sh*t a few years ago... I wont go there ... A good un was when I was on an advanced party to Leven prior to an International.... The England Captain (Steve Peart) and I shared a boat for a first day practise... on leaving the boat moorings and steadily motoring out into the loch, I heard him mutter " a penguine"....... I asked him "pardon Stevie?".... he again mumbled " What's a penguine doing there... what is a penguine doing on Leven?"...... I asked him again "what are you on about?".... He then said "Oh F**k... you heard me didnt you? ... of all the people to hear me talking out loud"..... For eveyones information, the Penguine was a Cormorant sat on the bank..... I have NEVER let him forget that....

Had a really good day on the Test this june, 5 salmon, 9, 11, 11 1/2, 12, and 12 1/2lb, more trout than I care to remember (upto 4 1/2lb), several decent chub, 2 nice pike, and so nearly the icing on the cake, a really big perch ,which fell off at the net. Definately a day to remember.
