Default Hand pain

Hi folks,

I'm hoping we have some physios or doctors on here as I'm having some proble,s with pain when casting.
I get pain in my right hand when casting, particularly on the back cast, it feels like it's right inside the hand behind the little and 3rd fingers and has really started to hamper my casting.

Does anyone have any suggestions apart from learning to cast with my left?

Thanks

Allan

Could be a few factors I think. Your age, occupation could also be linked to the pain you are experiencing. Your rod handle could be too thin or you could be gripping the handle too tightly. Sounds like tendon trouble to me but i could be wrong. Could be RSI (repetitive strain injury). Let us know.

I had a nasty bit of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome after a week's destination fishing. I was fishing all hours, and got a severe pain in my right hand. That was a year ago, and i still have a slight tingle in the fingers on that hand.

Try immobilising your wrist when casting, it helped a little for me.

Could well be referred pain from the elbow. Do you get any numbness or pins and needles? This would suggest pressure or entrapment of the nerve either at the elbow or wrist. Could also be a repetitive strain injury at the wrist. A sports physiotherapist may be helpful.

I'm 29 and do a bit of work (luckily not too much!) on the laptop, could be an issue. I don't think it's the handle, all my handles are a good size. The tight grip could be a factor, I'll try loosen my grip in the future.

I have very little wrist movement when casting as it is, I doubt it's carpal tunnel, at least I hope not.

No numbness or pins and needles, I think RSI is probably the most likely cause, I suppose I should get myself off to a pro.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

i also get the same pain... i figured it was RSI due to holding the rod tight for up to 12hours of fishing... im 30 so wouldnt imagine it being dissimilar to yourself... its a lot better now i give myself more of a break when im fishing long periods... and i dont mean just having a seat... i mean i force myself to put the rod down and relax for half an hour to loosen the wrist up... (eeerrr..... that last bit sounds dodgy!)

It's my back that starts to complain from standing and casting.

So on go the buzzers and out comes a seat, and I let the breeze do the work.

Then I'm left wondering why I spent so much fruitless time casting and retrieving and changing flies and lures, when the trout wanted buzzers all along!

Hi,

Is your rod balanced correctly?

I tried that but kept waking myself up when I had an itchy face, also, the girlfriend wasn't too impressed, she rang her Mam and told her I was getting into some really weird stuff!

Depends what I'm doing, I sometimes use a fairly unbalanced setup when I'm after the sea trout and salmon in certain conditions, it's pretty unforgiving, maybe I'll have to stick to my regular setup in the future.
