Default Loch Lomond no fly fishing rule?

Long story but i ended up at Balmaha today to hire a boat for a bit of Pike fly fishing.
We had a word with the guy in the boat yard and payed our money.
When we mentioned fly fishing he said it was not allowed on a Sunday

I tried to clarify this with him but he was pretty vague and i dont think he knows that facts.

He said and i quote" No fly fishing on a Sunday it is the queens day" "No salmon fishing on a Sunday"
Now maybe the queen was out fishing today and thats why which i would then raise a different thread about but i doubt it
He also said " you will not catch salmon on a rapala but you will slaughter them on the fly"

Now maybe i am a bit green about the ears but i take it you can spin rapalas up and down the lochs and around the mouth of the Edrick but no fly fishing of any way or form.

Can anyone put some light on this?

I would take the part about fly fishing with a pinch of salt. I have fished Lomond from my own boat several times this year and past in years at weekends fly fishing for pike. There is no Sunday fishing for game fish but coarse fishing is allowed seven days a week. There are method restrictions but fly fishing isn't one of them.

Therein lies the rub.
The very fact you mentioned fly fishing would make the boatman believe you were after game fish, not pike.
You gotta remember these old hands are "dyed in the wool" and have heard every story, and therefore react the same way each time.
If you had said just pike fishing, his reaction would have been different!!

I can assure you the guy in the boat yard was not too fussed about the fishing rules, he was more than happy to give us our money back.
He truely believed that he knew the rules and no fly fishing ment no fly fishing for any species

I tried to discuss it with him but i dont think he knew enough about the rules to put up an argument.

I have sent the Loch Lomond improvement association an email and i am awaiting a reply

Munro
