Default do you use braided loops?

After a Q re obtaining quality leaders i was pointed to this ..

i'm tempted to try a few homemade leaders just to see how they perform, nothing ventured and all that ..

Dry Fly 'Expert': Leader linguistics, tippet talk and tips...

the writer doesn't seem to excited about using loops and suggests a needle knot to connect line to leader..

would connecting the leader to the line permanantly like this help or hinder laying the leader/tippit down well ?

if i decided to ( if it's a better option) to tie leader directly to mainline could i use a small tippit ring to attach tippits to main leader material ?

Default Re: do you use braided loops?

After taking a friend's lead a few years ago, I create a whipped loop of the line's braid core at the tip of the fly line (the braid is exposed by melting a couple of inches of the plastic coating away using nail varnish remover or similar). I would never ever go back to braided loops now. I still have them out of necessity on a handful of sinking lines which are without the braid core and they seem cumbersome in the extreme....not that it matter too much on a fast sinking line. But on a floater, for dry fly work on a river? No chance.

You’re asking all the questions I did...............

The thing is that ask twenty fly fishers a question and you’ll get forty answers and none of them wrong.

Once you have tried them all you will know the one that works best for you in a given situation. I personally used to use a needle knot on a floating line but now I simply loop the end of the fly line with a spot of superglue and wrap it in tying silk. Its never failed or lost me a fish and can be whipped with a colour for weight identification ect if on a cassette.
Sinking lines just get a braided loop as I can’t see much of an advantage in any other system.

Try a few ways and pick your fave.

would you use a loop to loop to connect the line to the leader then?

does the lack of what becomes a floppy section of loop help lay the leader down? . i should imagine it does as there is more of a solid connection to help roll out the leader following the main instead of a limp wrist between the two ..

im just guessing here

Bear in mind the page you are reading is specifically for dry fly, and his needle knot is what suits him and some others best.

I never use braided loops, for wet or nymph fishing, preferring to use a grays loop, similar to needle knot, except it incorporates a loop, for loop-to-loop connections

Gray's Loop - Fly Line Leader Loop

And as someone previously stated, people have different opinions, nothing will suit everyone, it's part of what keeps fishing from being boring

Best regards
Jim

A greys loop works fine but if you use one, the knot may cut into the line coating allowing water to wick in so make sure you seal it.

Personally, I don't think that it makes too much difference when you are setting out. Braided loops are neatish and convenient. If you don't like them, cut them off and try one of the other methods.

i could live with both but would like to use the better of options available . The link mentioned a loop causing a hinge effect between main and leader IS THIS BAD ?

are we better with a stiffer link between the two ? my thoughts are that a stiffer link will infact roll the leader over with much less effort as it will be naturally following the main with less or no "hinge" effect ..

am i on the right lines ? ( no pun intended )

er..yes

could check out nail knots, whitlock glue joint and welded loops too.

Interesting question. Also interesting that top line manufacturers such as Rio embed loops into their fly lines and guys like Roman Moser recommend loop-to-loop connections. Also, furled leader folk recommend loop to loop connections.

My conclusion: it's such a minor part of the overall fishing situation so as to not make an ounce of difference what you use.

I use loop-to-loop connections all the time (fresh, salt, still or flowing) and it doesn't stop me catching fish.

Be careful what advice you read on the Internet: the blogger 'expert' you link to also recommends self-tied, knotted leaders using four-turn water knots.
