Looks to be the White Marked tussock Moth and be imported from the states......... right genus, wrong species........doh

It is the caterpillar of The Vapourer moth Orgyia antiqua.

It's one of the strangest caterpillar's I've ever seen in the flesh.

So is it common or a rare sight?
