Default North Devon - river trout fishing

I'm off on the family holiday in a week's time, staying near Shirwell, about 5 miles north east of Barnstable. I've got a 1 day pass to go fishing and, having consulted the maps, websites and this forum have ended up totally confused about where to go!

I know that the weather will make a difference but I would appreciate some advice on where would be a good place to try, ideally a medium sized river with a good chance of trout around the 1lb size, within 15 miles or so of Shirwell.

Thanks in advance

Taw and torridge offer day tickets in places (i'm pretty sure anyway). There are also river schemes that you could look in to, which offer very reasonable tickets on a number of stretches in devon and cornwall. Other than that you have a couple of good still waters, blakewell and bratton. Blakewell bigger average fish, bratton more secluded lovely browns to. Then you've got the reservoirs, wistland pound, clatworthy, wimbleball.
Hope that helps a little? get in touch if need to thanks jon

Hello Peter,

Get in touch with Pete T on here (or pete@dsoff.com), he runs the Devon school of Fly fishing from the Fox and Hounds hotel (great venue - even better beer)- he'll see you right for some fishing on the Taw.

Carl

Jon / Carl

Many thanks for your replies, based on that I'll give the Taw or Torridge a go!
