Default HELP! I can't get my fly tying gear out of the loft because....

...of a huge ( nay a monster ) WASPS nest!

I went up in the loft tonight to try and find the rest of my fly-tying gear so that I could take it with me to my caravan over the weekend and do some fly tying to get my stocks built up and nearly poo'd myself when I saw the size of it!!!
It's about 2 1/2 feet square at the base and 2-3 feet high, hanging from a low perlin onto the ceiling. At first it looked like a pile of straw and then I realised that it was the wasps that were raking about on my ceiling, chewing the timber for their nest.
I'd also taken a couple of mousetraps up, thinking it was mice that were making the scratching/chewing noise that we could hear on the bedroom ceiling when things were quiet...but mousetraps aren't going to be much use against wasps...

So, how the **** do I get rid of this huge nest???? I've had one up there once before which I just left alone but nothing like this!

I'm certainly not going up there to rake through piled up boxes of junk to find the rest of my fly tying kit until these pratts are gone!

Any suggestions on killing them off as I'm desperate to find my kit which could be anywhere up there ?

Tony

I would consider placing a can of insect fogger up there and leaving for a few hours. I am allergic and wont go near anything that large.

Don't know the situation in England but I got the council to remove one from a house I used to live in. They didn't charge.
I have also used a spray can of wasp nest killer on a SMALL nest and they went mental!! wouldn't recommend it on a big one lol

Have a word in your local tackle shop. Coarse anglers love the wasp grub as bait and some of them are quite adept at removing nests.

I can't get close enough to the nest from inside the loft to put one of those foggers in as the nest is in an awkward place and there's too much stuff to move without disturbing them and I don't wanna get trapped up there without proper gear and huge nest of wasps charging around!

There must be an external access for them to enter...if I can get up and put some of that powder at the entrance that might do the trick...on second thoughts, maybe it's time to concede and call in some local Wasp-Busters

I was hoping to get away this evening but looks like it'll be tomorrow now!

My advice is to leave well alone and get rentakill in or similar. Yes it will cost but you really don't want to get badly stung. Also some of the preparations used to kill off wasps are lethal in the wrong hands. Get a man who knows what he's doing.............birdsnest

I called the council staff out the last time I had a wasps nest in my loft and they wouldn't have anything to do with it as it meant going up a ladder to apply the powder to the entrance to kill them off. They do charge down in my area ( £45.00)

Apparently they aren't allowed go up ladders to do this sort of work as it's about health and safety!
I wonder if a private company would have the same approach?

I get lots of wasps nests and i manage to kill them by dusting the nest entrance with ant killer powder as night falls. Just one big puff and there gone.

If you can live without using the loft, the nest will be dead in a couple of months time. They don't reuse old nests, but they do build on top of them - a nest as large as that might not all be live.

Powder in the entrance would work, I think I would also consider trying the flea foggers - you don't need to get to the nest, just set a couple going as close as you dare and shut the hatch. Only issue is that they are really designed to kill things at ground level, but worth a shot I'd say.
