Default Buying tackle from the UK and shipping to US- what is this VAT business?

I'm interested in a Guideline reel but there are very limited sellers in the US, none that carry the model I'm interested in- the Quadra. While trolling the interwebs I came across a dealer in Glasgow that will ship to the US but their prices include the value added tax, what is that? Why is it 20 percent and since the product is being shipped out of country do I have to pay it? In the states we can legally avoid paying state sales taxes on merchandise if we order the products from another state and have them shipped to our residence.

Finally- has anyone used any of these reels and if so what do you think of them? For reference my reel collection runs the gambit from old Scientific Anglers clickers and Lamson LPs to Loop/Danielsson reels and a few Abels tossed in here and there.

Thanks and tight lines-
Russell

Jim Williams of Just Reels has given up the Guideline dealership because they are pulling out of the US. He has some in his Misc/Used section. His site is Just Reels Fly Fishing Reels drop him an email or call and you might be lucky

In this country just about everything you buy has a government tax called Value Added Tax.
Is a method of raising revenue from the sale of goods.
Is unavoidable if buying goods new in the uk. as is added at point of sale.

Actually Russ it's darned easy to get the VAT passed on your purchase. Been doing same for years as the 'products' are for 'export.' There may be a bit of paperwork on the seller's part (no clue what that may be, but apparently it's not a "big deal."

Only thing you have to remind the seller is where you are and to fill out the 'form(s).' Can't say how that works if shipping to another European Country, but over here to "The States" works just fine. Not to mention reduces you cost by something like 22'ish percent which covers the extra postage.

As far as delivery time, (two packages in the last 5-8 days) it usually takes about 5-7 working days based on the postage date. Was one odd one off, but that was during really shittttty winter weather over much of the United States a few months ago.

Sending 'stuff' the other way usually takes about the same time from when you Post till same is in the UK. There, that can take a bit more time for delivery.

One bit of advise for someone sending 'things' to the UK, you can sign up for all sorts of this and that with the US Postal Service ...(on line tracking, return receipt requested, et al) .. but once the package hits the UK ... Nada happens back from their end. Save for insuring same (possibly smart?), no point in paying the extra cost involved.

Oh Goodie; Stock Market (thanks France) tanked another 500+ points. Another reason to be glad my 'work computer' is now a very expensive 'paper weight.'

Many PM's/e-mails the past several day asking 'How are you doing?' Obviously my angst/ah-sh its/et al's, and the 'et al's' were by far the personal worst, came through loud and clear in my posts. Doesn't happen often, many years apart, but life becomes an upside down pyramid and you know what collects at the bottom.

For that I must apologize, but the 'collective you' pulled me up by the ears, gave me a good shake and a 'get on with it, you ain't .. well, the words would be removed by Mr M or Sofi. Or whom-ever.

Hi
Aenoon is incorrect. Exports are exempt from VAT. You need to find a dealer who is used to exporting (from your post I assume you are based in the USA).

The downside is you may be liable to the USA import tax on the value of the goods you are importing (you will need to check this with your local post service as Federal and State taxes may apply).

Try these guys:
Guideline Quadra Fly Reel – Glasgow Angling Centre

Guideline Quadra Fly Reels - Sportfish

The latter has a 10% discount on at the moment

Best regards
C

Thanks everyone for the great info!!! I'll have a look at some of the vendors mentioned. FWIW, Just Reels seems to be a dead end for Guideline products but I'll certainly have a look at the UK dealer that was recommended.
