Not an expert on rivers, but I'd say that if the water is coloured and/or dangerously high, I'd be heading for the nearest loch.

When heavy rain raises the levels of Northern fast flowing rivers, the water colours up and many fish will stop feeding until the water stops rising and begins to run off/clear slightly. ( It's a good time for worm fishing LOL).

However once the water starts running off sufficiently and the fish begin to rise again, if I remember rightly, a good fly was always a Black Pennel or Black Spider in those conditions!

Head high up the tributaries when the rain stops and water starts to drop. The Leader is a good bet stay off the main river unless you know what you are doing

I would say get your rod and venture out to look for some slack water.at one time if conditions were bad I would have not fished and mopped around the house but these days due to having a lot of commitments I find that the conditions seem always bad. Not wanting to miss my designated days fishing I just go and it seems to have improved my fishing, if you can cast and spot fish when it's blowing a gale you can certainly catch fish when conditions are perfect.
Although Last night the river was raging through with gale force winds and I was hooked into a three pound dollie which I lost close to the bank and at that point was thinking should have stayed in.
