repooh is on a distinguished road
Default The business end.

Newbie here, so I have a few questions about leaders and tippets.

So initialy I'll fish lakes so the majority of the Trout stock will be 2-4lb, with a few monsters.

In general what breaking strain tapered leader would you use, and would you match the tippet to the leader breaking strain. Is hook size a consideration.

Also the advantages or not of Fluorocarbon and Copolymer, where do you use each dry fly or wet fly? or is this personal choice.

Well for starters, if you are fishing stocked stillwaters, most people would fish between 6 and 10lb breaking strain tippet but dropping as low as 2-3lbs if targeting spooky fish or using very small flies.
You can add tippet to the leader using a knot or leader ring, of the same or lower breaking strain.
(This is complicated further by diameter of the tippet, but that's perhaps unneccessary to consider when starting out)
Hook size is a consideration in that a small fly on thick diameter tippet will not hang and move in a convincing manner (assuming that you can get the tippet through the eye of the hook in the first place!)
There are pros and cons for Mono, copolymer and fluoro and people have different views and opinions. You might want to start off using mono, it's been around for a while now and lots of people are very happy to continue using it.

Where are you planning to have your first outing?
