Default Killer Shrimp

Just noticed this has been listed as the worst invasive pest in our waterways. Above himalayan balsam, japanese knotweed and even mink. Atleast the article implies there will be an increase in funding for dealing with invasive species.

BBC News - 'Killer' shrimps worst alien invader of waterways

IMO we will be very lucky if we can iradicate the Killer Shrimp. Once its taken hold it will spread from water to water. It has spread across Europe and from there to here in the balast water on cargo ships.Like the grey squirrel we may have to learn to live with it. There is one bright side to the KS trout love them.

Actually I believe the means by which it got to Grafham is via yachts, not cargo ships. I've yet to see a super-tanker moored off the lodge!

in point of fact, its been said to have been brought by birds, ducks, geese.to our waters as like BK said in the water balast tanks of yachts,it will travel to most waters in years to come. so yes get used to it.you cant kill it without killing the suroundings.it has been stated that trials have taken place.with the use of glutaraldehyde, for the disinfectant for the shrimp but you still can only kill it in small areas,ie water tanks.ont in the open.migrating birds will take it every where. i have the list of trials,AT quatchem-limited.

Actually Bob I was referring to how it got to Great Britain not Grafham. Ships discharged in the harbours and the sailing yatch picked up the KS or eggs. Someone brought their yatch from a harbour onto Grafham and the rest is history or so they say. My information comes directly fro the EA. It's also in Cardiff Bay and a Welsh reservoir.

The down side though, if the article is true to its word, is you won't be allowed to fish for them.

Tough EU targets

Invasive species can even become so prolific that
anglers, fishermen and boaters cannot use the waterways.

Despite growing to just 30mm long, Dikerogammarus villosus
has been identified as being the worst alien invader due to its
voracious appetite which alters the make-up of habitats it invades.

I sincerely hope the killer shrimp never reaches Brenig. After fishing there at the weekend, and after hearing of similar experiences, I'd be worried the shrimp would eat the fish they are stocking in there.

Shocking BK.

Year on year I hear Brenig has finally sorted it's stocking policy out, and that 'this' year would finally see it return to one of the premier waters in Wales. Truth be told, I'd rather sit at home than furnish them with another £40 of my hard earned.

Ty Nant comp over the weekend. Biggest fish of the weekend......2lb (all 40 boats out on the Saturday and Sunday)

That terrible Stuart and not at all what you'd expect from a premier fishery. They must be doing a lot of damage to their reputation.
