Default reel set up

Not sure if i have done this correct . I put backing on and main line , The main line stops at about 1/8" from the top of the spool.

I then fitted the braided loop but could not get the line all the way as the rubber tube at the loop end wouldn't allow it so i pushed the main line in as far is would go and then pulled the tube up over joint.. This leaves about 1" of just braid ..

I then fitted the tapered leader, the loop on the leader was a bit shabby so i cut this off and used a grinner knot to connect to the braided loop .

so my questions

1, have i done it right ?

2, does the link between braided loop and leader need to be "loose" ?

3, is the leader normally on the reel all the time or is this something that's done riverside ?

you have done fine so far you can put your leader on by a loop to loop or grinner knot as you have done i prefer the knot as i think it aids turnover ref leaving leader on line i would not advise this as it can lead to tangles or cut into your flyline one other tip when you finish with your reel always leave about 6inches of line off the reel to avoid tangles when storing

If you haven't pinched/pulled the line right up to where it meets the loop ( double wall of braid ) and there is a gap between the end of the line and the loop it will cause hinging when you try to cast. Before you attach the loop pull the sleeve over the double wall of braid before you inch the line up,this will allow you to inch the line up right up to where it should be

Another trick is to take the tube off the braid, then when you have fitted the flyline(right up to the loop,or as close as you can get it)then put a piece of leader/mono through loop, fold over.pass doubled mono through sleeve,Then slide sleeve down over braid loop to the join.Easy peasy.
DO NOT have unsupported braid.
