Try the search function.

Dry, flies that have hatched or have landed on the surface.

Buzzers ,Pre hatch midges

Nymphs .most larval stages of lots of insects

Wets,General eat me not representing anything but food.

Thanks for that Jim. Not sure if i'm worrying too much about this issue .. Once i have the basics of what each fly represents like you have explained am i better off buying a small selection of each, have a look round at a venue to see what insects etc i can see then try and use a fly that's similar to what i see actually at the venue ?

i know i have lots to learn , i think the vast amount of variations of flies is confusing for a newcomer to fly fishing ..

Get ''Trout from Stillwaters'' or ''the complete flyfisher'' by Peter Lapsley.easy to read and understand.Normally get a paperback version from Amazon for not a lot.
These books will answer nearly every question you can think of.

your bang on Billy, get a few of each of the flies and do just as you said, see whats on the menu for the trout at your venue.
To be very basic, dries are probably better on the small and drab side, as are nymphs, these will look "like trout food".
Wets(or lures) tend to be sometimes larger, but definatley more flashy, not so much to look like food, more trigger a curious or agressive take. Trout have no hands so if they want to know what something is, in the mouth it goes. Dont get too caught up in patterns, i think most of us carry heaps of flies that never get wet and stick to a few tried and tested numbers, i know my best flies are the most basic and easy to tie.
A good presentation of the "wrong" fly, will often catch more than the "right" fly poorly presented, in my limited experience anyway.
Hope that ramble helped a bit,
Tightlines
Scotty

EDIT
Jim an caenis got in with the books just as i posted, far better advice there Billy! canna beat a good book!

Thumbs up Re: another Q re flies

Hi Mojha

I found a cracking little book on a certain auction site on the internet for just over £5 inc postage.. Search for STILLWATER FLY SWOTTER. This little pocket book has all the info regarding what type of flies to use where and when. What flies work well in in what months and what to be fished at what level of the water and what speed to retrieve.Even explains how to read the water. I would recommend this book to any beginner who wants a little heads up on what fly, nymph or lure to use throughout the season. This little book goes everywhere now.

'Trout flies of stillwater' by John Goddard is another older but very informative book that can be had for not a lot...

Trout Flies of Stillwater: Amazon.co.uk: John Goddard: Books Trout Flies of Stillwater: Amazon.co.uk: John Goddard: Books

Also Still-water Flies: How and When to Fish Them by the same author.

Still-water Flies: How and When to Fish Them Fishing: Amazon.co.uk: John Goddard, Ted Andrews: Books Still-water Flies: How and When to Fish Them Fishing: Amazon.co.uk: John Goddard, Ted Andrews: Books

Not the most modern, but still worth a read if you are starting out and want to learn more about natural insects and their imitations... plus you'll be wanting to tie your own in no time.

Andrew
