Default Braided loops

just started getting my fly gear through the post.. i recieved my backing and line today along with some braided loops .

looking at the instructions there's a small tube on the braid and i'm supposed to put the fly line inside the braid and slip the plastic tube over the join to lock in place..

will this hold ?? seems a bit inadequate to me but then i'm new..

Yes it will hold, in you are not too confident, then apply a little superglue either side of the sleave or put some superglue on the end of the braid then slide the sleave over the glue.

Billy,

For a step by step Have a look at this Fitting a Leader Loop - Introduction to Fly Fishing

Some of the alternatives can be found on this thread http://www.flyforums.co.uk/fly-lines...e-bonanza.html

I do not use the tube chosing to whip the braid in place ,but as a beginner, then slide the tube into place and put a tiny drop of superglue at both ends,it will percolate inside.
Make sure the flyline is butted right up to as close to the loop as it can go.
The braid grips the flyline when pulled.
DO NOT use a lot of superglue as this just makes the braid stiff and inflexible, and it will crack.

Another alternative, which I prefer and is very easy is the Gray's Loop - I do the simplified version at bottom of page:
Gray's Loop - Fly Line Leader Loop

Very neat, more secure, less drag on the surface. Also very easy to replace on bankside if needs be.

Whatever method you use apply a dab of glue or varnish to the cut end of the fly line to seal it first, otherwise its starts to soak up water after a while, causing the last few inches to sink.

Just a heads up, supaglue now comes in gel form that is also flexible (not the supaglue gel). Used it the other day for a loop and seems to do what it says.

Thanks chaps , wasn't sure if superglue would perish the line..

Jim thanks for the thought re being new I do lots of course fishing ( or did) and pike etc .. i have 1 knot i use for everything , not sure what it's called , an old guy showed me when i was beach casting one day and i use it to tie hooks on and also join 2 lines together etc... i use it for attaching tapered shock leader to my mainline when b/casting..

basically you fold the line back on itself once through hook eye then form a loop , the tag end goes through the loop 4/ times then pull tag end away from loop / wet and pull together tight , looks a bit like a noose when finished. the harder you pull the tighter the knot..

cheers anyway lads , it's all knowledge
