Question Talyllyn Lake Snowdonia

Hello Folks.
Has anyone fished Talyllyn lately? Hubby and I are going there for a couple of days at the beginning of September.
Is it possible to wade when fishing from the bank?
Any "killers" flies that work?!!!
Cheers...Croaks

Very good idea

Yes but not really needed ,could do much of it with wellingtons, even better from a boat though ,or it is a float tube venue that I must fish that way at least once.

The haul a gwynt (SP) with a greenwell wet were some of my favorites.

Used to fish it a fair bit ,would Stay at Brigands Inn on the Dovey ,if the Dovey was of for seatrouting the Llyn would be my default venue .
Brigands went up market ,and no longer has the fishing rights, and especially no longer has mine hosts John and Julie, both of whom were remarkably kind to a beginner at migratory fishing .Sadly missed by myself and SWMBO who loved the countryside there and the laid back "vibe" in the Inn.

Thanks Andy.

Re the Haul a Gwynt. Do you have an idea how it is tied please?
We will be staying at the Tynycornel Hotel, & fishing from there. Definately will have a boat on 2nd day. I really enjoy bank fishing so will be happy to do that on the afteroon of the day we get there.

Cheers...Croaks

Wets
scroll well down the page here and you will see some varients and close to the original.
basicly a peacock herl body with a cock pheasant neck hackle ,as to the wing not sure .
These days I would be a Kate Maclaren user for a similar look ,not a fan of peacock herl ,too fragile, guess I might dress a similar using one of the peacock flavoured synthetic dubbings.

Thanks a lot Andy.
I have had a good look and decided that their flies are just so beautiful I'm going to order a few from them, as it would probably be cheaper than trying to buy some of the materials taht I don't already have.
Personally I quite like peacock herl, but I have a source for fresh ones and they are very strong.
I've spent nearly all day tying my own killer flies. I call them Dead Damsels and fish them dry. They've been doing the business at Kennick the past couple of weeks. Trouble is they use deer hair, are size 16 and the fish are loving them so much they are destroying them!
Cheers...Croaks

Size 12 (sometimes #14)

Tying silk ~ Black

Body ~ Black ostritch herl (black chenille also effective)

Wing ~ Crow (anything works though eg. snipe or starling, for a greyer effect).

Cloaking hackle ~ Cock pheasant taken 2/3 up the neck, the black tips of the smaller feathers forming an effective border which the larger neck feathers don't.

I think Mitch Atherton's (newsagent) shop in Trawsfynnydd still sells the good version. I haven't been in years mind. Get some of his Yorke Specials, on #10 or 12 doubles, for a bigger wave.

Haul a Gwynt means 'Sun and Wind' in Welsh; exactly the conditions to fish the fly, with fluffy clouds about.

No probs ACW. Is that why your return PM, ref 'that' other pub, was left blank?

Actually I tried peacock herl, and it works, but ostritch is more translucent in the sunny conditions specified. Expect takes just as one of those fluffy white clouds races across the sun, deadly.

For more overcast conditions the 'Yorkie' (York's Special) is better, especially with a long red Ibis tail, rather than the wooly one now specified. Moc lists that dressing on page 77.

Hi croaks

Phil Wood is your man, known as "Robroy" on this forum. he's the head ghille at Talyllyn and always has his finger on the pulse. If you don't have any luck with Phil, send me a PM closer to the time and I'll give you an up to date report on what's working. I only live 15 minutes away so I may even pop over and say hello.

September should see them up on the dries. Olive klinks, black sedgehogs and bibio hoppers worked well for me last year.

During your stay I'd also recommend a visit to Bugeilyn if you get the chance. also managed by Talyllyn it's a 50(ish) acre hill lake approx 30 minutes drive away in the middle of nowhere! it's usually a 4x4 or a 2 mile easy walk from the main road but Robroy told me last week that improvements have been made to the road in the last few weeks so it may be passable by car now. I need to take a spin up there next week so I'll report back.

Gareth
