Default tail slapping

dont get excited men, ladies ,!!!

its just a bit strange at the moment , the last few sessions on the river, have produced a bit of an eye opener for me , like the other morning , missed the first 10 or so massive agressive rises to my fly , then started hitting them , in the tail !!! yep the next 5 or 6 fish were hooked in the tail ,
(then back to normality) , within half an hour i was catching them as you should, in the mouth ,
whats the procedure in these cases ??, dont strike and let the fish come back for the drowend fly , or just carry on striking as normal, and risk missing or foul hooking one or two ,
regards nigel

Could it be the fish are turning away from the fly as they have seen something wrong? Obviously catching the fly with their tail as they past.

I would guess at 'fly size'. The fish may like what they see and are trying to drown the fly..... maybe try a smaller fly next time it happens?
