Default Advice Needed! Wye and Elan Valleys

Hi all
I am new to this forum and it looks great so far!!

I am off to the Wye Valley, Rhayader and Elan Valley in 2 weeks with my son for some trout fishing, neither of us are any good or experienced and we went to the same place last year and caught ............ nothing!!!!

I am after some advise on what flies to use on the rivers and reservoirs during August and maybe some tips and tricks on methods if there is anyone familiar with these waters!!

I need to keep a 14 year old keen!!!

Many thanks in advance

Richard

Not fished any of those places but i would imagine if the weather keeps up reservoir fish will be on the bottom as for the rivers ,i was in north wales a few weeks back and the rivers were really low and it was hard work best time for rivers imo would be early morning and evening once again its all weather dependant.I have had great success with fishing the duo that is a bouyant fly on the dropper and a size 14 16 grhe with a gold bead on the point hope this helps.

Thank you Horses

Forgive me but can you explain "duo that is a bouyant fly on the dropper and a size 14 16 grhe with a gold bead on the point"

I have been really lucky and mainly fished where there are fish rising so have not had to go below the waterline before!!!

Maybe I need some lessons!!!

A group of us the the Elan last year around November, its a lovely river and the level's are well controlled, a good river to fish when others are in flood. There are brown trout and grayling. As noted above your best bet would be to fish the duo method, that's where you fish a bouyant dry i.e. a klinkhammer, or large sedge on the dropper and a nymph on the point (the end of the line). You attached the dropper by tying a lenght of about 2ft to your main line via a 2 or 3 turn water knot, see the knot section on this forum of google water knots for instruction. The duo is best fished in faster streamier water, usually found at the middle to the top of the pool. However if you see rising fish try a dry fly.
The cost of a day ticket was £5.00, great value!!
