Default Rod weight identification

Morning all...

Recently, I aquired a rather nice very much second had rod.

There's no markings on it at all - other than two brand lables - id'ing as a Daiwa rod, made in Scotland.

The question is - how can I establish the weight of the rod? anecdotedly, I was told by the previous owner that it might be a #7, or possibly a #6, butthat he'd always used #7 line on it... is there any way to establish this definitively?

Cheers

Nick

I was given this link as a way of establishing a line rating on a rod where the markings had worn off

The Common Cents System

Haven't actually tried it as I currently have no plan to use the rod but reading through it, it makes a lot of sense. When I bring that rod out of retirement I will give it a go.

Well there is always the Common Cents System - which you can google.

However, most experienced fishermen will use the rating on the butt as a guide only and decide for themselves which line works best for them on that particular rod for the purpose it will be put to.

Remember that the guy who rated the rod will probably be averaging out the different uses of the rod and the type of casters who will use it.

So go out with a selection of lines if you have them and cast at all the normal distances you will fish the rod at:

so if you are a river fisherman and the rod is predominantly used with no more that 10m of line out of the tip then bias your tests for that range.

Obviously if you are a reservoir bank fisher and most of your casting is 20m+ then bias your test to that range.

Will definitely try out the comon cents method (and thanks euan for the link)

in tems of trying the rod out for my self - I'm still very much a novice caster lol... so my casting range is somewhat random at the moment, without changing lines - lol

but thanks for the advice

Any pics of the rod, and what size and how many pieces. 2 piece?

Maybe someone will recognise the blank from pics and be able to shed more light on it for you.

Daiwa were noted for producing rods with a wide AFTM rating, for example I have an 11'3 Whisker Kevlar which is rated 4-7, so it really is a case of trial and error for you unless someone recognises the rod and knows more about its uses.

Easy way. Open a free account at www.photobucket.com , it takes a few seconds to register.

Upload pic and when it appears as small pic on bottom left of screen, click on the pic to enlarge it.

To the right of the enlarged image is a box with four codes. Simply click on the bottom link and cut this [hold down ctrl and press v] then come to where you want to post it on the forum thread, and paste. (Hold down trl again and press C]

The code then appears on the forum post and when you hit submit post the pic will show up.

Re-size your pics to 800x600
