Twas Saturday 23rd July around 7-30am and i set off to meet Terry (verynewtofly) through Ripon on my way to Masham and on toward the River Cover,on the final piece of road to the Cover Bridge Inn car park where i was meeting Terry at around 10am
i arrived at approx 9 am to check on the river albeit Nick the landlord had been to look at the river for me the night before ,just to make sure it was fishable as folk have different perceptions of fishable and not fishable ,Nick however is one person you can rely on for the info ,as he said ,it was low and slightly coloured a nice tea colour ,this i thought would aid us as it was a bright day forecast

you can see the colour in this pic
having already got the day ticket for Terry i was awaiting his arrival after looking at the river and a brief chat with Nick,Terry arrived as arranged and slightly ahead of schedule

makes a change as someone i go with is usually erm latish shall we say, eh.. Fred, whilst waiting i took a couple of pics looking across towards the river..
so were all tackled up and ready to go ,over the bridge onto the far bank and put Terry into long shaded pool ,i told Terry to cast up and across towards some gnarled old tree roots where he rose a few but failed to connect with them
then along comes my favourite time for taking pics just when the old "tree trout" strikes with a lightning fast take..
next onto a long steady glide where wading has to be done very slowly so as not to put waves over the fish ahead of us ,

the flow was at a near stand still so we moved to the head of the pool where i know lies some good trout along with some good grayling
that's right Terry let it come right down to the tree on the far bank
OI YOU YES YOU are you going to listen
see what happens when you listen

but alas this one was released whilst playing it
Terry was an excellent listener he did all was asked of him etc the fish just seemed to evade a total capture to succumb to the net , we tried all sorts of pools and Terry rose more than enough fish so he was doing things right

the fish just were not hanging themselves enough to come to the net

he told me he had never caught a grayling so in a roundabout way that seemed to become the remit for me to get him to catch a grayling so i put him in pools that i knew held smaller grayling ,these were proving difficult for Terry to connect with as they seemed extra fast on the take today ,so a change from the griffiths to an elk hair sedge in a size 16 to give Terry a more visual fly for the strike i thought would help him ,they were still proving difficult to hit but were attacking the elk hair with more vigour, i wa feeling a bit sorry for Terry he had done everything right but yet failed to catch the River Cover fish were once again proving hard to extract from there watery lairs despite hooking plenty but losing them midstream of the fight, one last chance as we headed back to the cars in the one pool where i just felt something in my water that Terry would catch ,i was hoping for a small grayling for him seeing as he had never had one but anything would do to stop him having a blank......................
AT LAST ............

SMALL BUT PERFECT IN EVERY WAY AND TERY WAS OVER THE MOON

I WAS SO PLEASED FOR HIM HE HAD TRIED SO HARD AND DID EVERYTHING HE WAS TOLD AND ROSE PLENTY ,WELL DONE TERRY

on the way back to the car another photographic opportunity arose ,a picture of a round peg trying to get in a square hole

PSSSSTTTT terry i don't think its ya hat you need to take off to get through there

thanks for a great day Terry mate and look forward to the next one with the "manc planc" on the Bain and Ure .where if ya dont get a grayling i will chuck you in
