Default reverse hook daddy.

An old guy i met years ago when i was a lad. Showed me a daddy pattern i'd never seen before. It was a standard dressing for the daddy, but the hook was facing up, that the point was out the water.
He said it gave a more realistic footprint when on the water. It seemed to work very well for him.
I got Davy McPhail to tie me one up a while back, but miss layed it. Found it again tonight, so going to give it a bash later on today.

I was wondering if anyone else has come across this way of tying before?

aye, ive done a few dries that way round, but most often i tie bottom scratching nymphs and lures like that to stop them snagging. I dont think it affects my catch rate much, but it does mean i keep my flies longer.

Designed for rivers if my memory serves me right, as the thinking was that the presentation would be correct for the drifting fly.

The presentation is the big thing with this pattern, they are effective both on river & loch.

This type of tying first came to prominace in the early eighties by John Goddard and Brian Clark in their book "The Educated trout", it featured in "A World About Us" ducumentory. They tried dry flies, hawthorns and duns. Tried some myself but the idea doesn't seem to have caught on.

I first came across them in the mid 70s. I'd only ever used traditional tied wets & drys. It's a more realistic looking way to fish a fly.

On a loch you say.
Would this not defeat the purpose if you are going to be twitching the fly back in reverse.

The fly is still the same, it's just the position of the hook thats different.

I understand that bit,its just I dont see the point on stillwater though as like I said if you are twitching the fly back slowly it will be going in reverse unless you are tying it on to the bend.
If someone can enlighten me though I would be grateful.
