Default Waterproof over or under Vest ....

So if you're wearing something like one of the 'fishpond type' multi-pocket waistcoat/backpack type arrangements - what do you tend to wear with it as a rule, do you have a short lightweight waterproof to throw over the top of it all if wading, or do you wear more substantial waterproof and then the waistcoat over the top - what preferences do you have (?) and I guess it depends if you're wading in the summer or trying to keep warm on the bank in the winter !

cheers - Paul.

Hi Paul
I wear a medium weight waterproof jacket over my vest if it's raining I hate everything in the pockets getting wet.In winter it's a heavy weight waterproof with a fleece, for warmth raining or not. If wading my over jackets are shorter as is my vest.

Windshadow from Rohan. Takes up very little room packed into its own inside pocket and keeps out the wind and showers.

I don't have the kit you are referring to but I would always wear it over whatever waterproof you are wearing. Everything should be dried out approriately when you get home anyway.

Your jackets will have to be pretty huge to cover a fishpond pack, surely?

I have a lightweight jacket folded into the large pocket in the back of my vest.

If its raining when I start it goes under the vest if its a sudden shower it goes over. If its bombing it down and cold a dirty great coat over the top. If its very cold and bouncing off the water then pirched at the end of the nearest bar with a large malt......................

cheers for the ideas folks - (and apologies for posting a question then being out of internet access for 48hrs - frustrating timing that one) - I guess I'd always envisaged them being an 'outer item' not withstanding a quick cover up needed in case of unexpected shower - then saw advert for coat to 'stretch over whatever vest you may be wearing' so was just interested to see how different people approached the issue, often find people have some interesting ideas and little unique tips - cheers for that.

If it's really pelting it down, and the waistcoat is outside the waterproof getting soaked through, the waterproof will let in water. I discovered this during torrential rain the other week. I wasn't too wet myself, but the ciggie papers I had in my waterproof's pocket were ruined. Disaster!

99% of the folks here in the PNW have (down pour) a rain coat over their vest. Assuming you're even got all that 'cra p' on you.

Backpack or waistcoat, I wear them both over my jacket. Don't want to be having to undo or take of my jacket to get to stuff when its raining. My Snowbee backpack is waterproof, and I also found a waterproof (pretty much) waistcoat: Daiwa Wilderness model Anything that really cant get wet - eg car keys, phone, wallet etc, I keep separate or in a sealed bag/poly bag.
