Default Avoiding small course fish when fishing a dry...

On a recent trip I was plagued with small course fish while trying to fish for rising trout.
Despite the fact that earlier in the day it hadn't been a problem.
It was incredibly frustrating as even if they weren't actually swallowing the fly (and quite often they were) they were quite quickly drowning it.

I tried everything, larger flies, moving round the lake etc etc but in the end I had to give up and fish under the surface despite knowing that trout were rising.

So have any of you more experienced guys got any good tips for dealing with this?
Or are there just times when you have to cut your losses and change tactic?

Cheers

Dan

Once had a minnow take an 18s black gnat I was using, it did spit it out and immediately a trout took it sub surface, that I caught.

Sometimes you just have to grin and bare it.

If you fished our badly understocked reservoir you'd be happy to catch a few rudd on dries.
