He's just starting out. I would think he would find it easier on a a loch as we shall be going out on stillwaters a few times before he goes up there. Having said that, I may be joining him for a few days and it would be good to be able to introduce him to rivers as well.
So I guess, information on either would be great.

I fished that burn a couple of times Jim, we had the last cottage/croft as you leave the village on the road to St Johns in Dalry.
I have to say, I never saw a fish in it, but it's very pretty, and has a cracking pool where it joins the upper Nith.
Some nice wee lochs as well fairly close by, but I never tried those.
Good fishing for reasonable money on the Buccleugh estate water in nearby Thornhill I think.

if its a friendly small stillwater you are after you wont go wrong talking to wullie and wilma at Alderneuk... great wee spot... an hour away from me but i still consider it my 'local' even tho there are fisheries closer to home... top class family run, friendly, banter filled, free tea, bacon and egg roll for £1.50, and some of the finest quality, hard fighting fish around... you cant go wrong!!!!

Drum Loch is well worth a visit, near Dalswinton. River Nith is superb if it's river fishing you want.

Cheers Diarmid.

As Wullie said you have his water Alderneuk as for quality, variety and size of fish number one small water anywhere around Dumfries. On the outskirts of NW Dumfries you have Jericho Loch and a few miles out you have The Drum, run by Andy Ross. If you nip over the hill to Thornhill you have Morton Loch and Kettleton amongst others owned and run by Buccleuch Estates, google buccleuch sporting for more info.

Mr Trout's geography is slightly out, the Dalwhat Water runs through Moniaive and is the river you cross on the hump backed bridge in the vallage. On the other side you have the Craigdarroch Water and Castlefairn Water. They combine just south of the village to become the Cairn Water to which the Dalwhat joins which runs south for about 14 or so miles and then joins the River Nith on the outskirts of Dumfries.

The Dumfries and Galloway Angling Association controls large parts of the River Cairn below Moniaive including the Dalwhat Water from the footbridge near the football pitch and the Cairn Water. It is not the complete river as Maxwelltown Estate owns fishings but I not aware iof they let it.
If you are looking to fish the Cairn DGAA permits are available via FishPal or google fish Nith.

There are brown trout in it but the river high up doesn't get any migratory fish until much later in the season as there are two sets of falls to go over and most of the salmon won't start running until at least August and it needs to be a wet one.

Above the village it may be a matter of finding the landowner and asking, not sure, I think there are a few fishers in the village and enquiry in the pub may help.
Again if you nip across the hill you have the Mid Nithsdale beat on the Nith and I think they do a variety of tickets, again a look in Fish Nith would be suggested.

Hope this helps in some way.

Wow! That really is very detailed and very helpful. I'll pass it all on ( and hopefully take advantage myself)

Thank you to everyone.
