Default Picking up only the small fish?

I am having a small problem which I hope I could get some advice about.
Having a river by the side of my house (lucky or what) which is full of small wild brownies and the odd bigger fish. I have now (sort of as I am quite new to the fly) mastered how to catch off the top in the spring and summer.
However the bigger fish seem to fall to course fishing tacktics as witness last night when an relitivly new course fisher landed a brownie of about 1 1/2 pound (unfortunatly it was deep hook on maggot and he was trying to drag the hook out of its gut, I managed to intervene politly and got the hook out and returned the fish in good health)
Do I need to be fishing wets to pick up the bigger fish or have I just been unlukey catching the smaller fish (this is not a problem to me though as the small fish are fin perfect and still a pleasure to catch)
Hope you can help
Stu

Bigger fish tend to be warier and take up the best lies, which are usually the hardest to reach with a dry fly. As another relative newby who has started to catch a few bigger wild fish recently I can wholeheartedly recommend the Klink'n'Dink, Duo, or New Zealand method. Take a buoyant dry fly, parachute hackled emergers like the Klinkhamer work well, tie on a length of fine tippet to the bend and suspend a weighted nymph, a copper beaded GRHE with flat gold tinsel is my favourite. Flick it into the seams of some of the faster stretches, anywhere deep and a bit turbulent and you may be pleasantly surprised how often it gets results. The indicator dry will pick up a few off the top too if conditions are favourable.

Give it a go!
