Default River Irwell............

Just like to thank The Riverfly Partnership for some invaluable training in the art of kick sampling and identification.
As part of nursing the Irwell back to health the river can now boast a dozen monitors (soon to be over 20), collating species information as an early warning system in case of future pollution.
Anyone wishing to help or perhaps just fish the river please visit the Salford Friendly Anglers web site and sign up for free membership.

I would also like to thank the tireless commitment and dedication Mike Duddy has shown in our quest for a cleaner Irwell. Mike (nelson66) is spearheading not only a fine angling club but a long term local campaign to pressurise the authorities to provide a cleaner environment for all.
The positive outlook on his quest draws all that work with him to give a little back to the river and I for one am proud to join forces and push together.

All those involved in the clean up of the Irwell deserve the gratitude of the entire community and beyond.
Every time I hear of a river brought back from the grave, it's a great feeling even if I'll never see it or fish it.

Great stuff A.H.
You'll be able to show us some kick sampling at the Stocks meet then!

The rivers are coming on fine in this neck of the woods now. It's people like A.H and company that ensure they keep that way.

It always bothered me when on the Irwell that the few small steps I took towards conservation, although time consuming for me were a drop in the ocean and that one day if the fish stocks increased sufficiently syndicates and clubs would take over and although not contributing to the rivers recovery would expect the likes of me to pay for the privilege to fish.
The good thing about Salford Friendly is that they fly the free access for all banner and to be honest so far it's working. They are also committed to join forces with any organisation whos work includes river wildlife conservation so that all know what is going on and projects are not duplicated.

Joined SFAS.

A pleasure to see the river getting back to how it should be after what, 2 hundred years?
And it's good that deep pockets won't take the fishing......

Well done.

It's best done in slightly less than 50 foot of water but you could always watch the bubbles.

Its a strange thing but when I began fishing the Irwell I wanted to cover every inch and publish the best spots and runs but during my quest I discovered that many of the areas are only just holding on and an army of anglers following my example would soon destroy the fish population. I think it will be many years before the water is fully fishable and the one thing holding it back remains the raw sewage UU regularly pour into the river.

I think U.U. only pay lip service to conservation.

I live close to the River Roach and that never really recovers from sewage works overflows. Some, apparently, for no obvious reason.
Any idea what the EA are doing to monitor or stop it?

Maybe it needs more publicity, but I doubt anything would shame UU

Does the works at Irwell Vale overflow? It looked clean up there last time I was there
