I fished Avington the day before BB, ie on Friday 22 July.

When tackling up, I remembered two things, first the comments from Neil Maidment and others about reduced weed growth and blanket weed, specially in the second lake; and Dorjee's advice when selling me my ticket to expect to catch my fish in the morning as the blanket weed would be a problem in the afternoon.

There were several good fish to be seen in the first lake as I walked by but they were being hammered by other anglers even at 8:15am so after a cursory few casts I moved on to the top lake where there were plenty of fish. Interesting them was another matter but by lunchtime I'd stalked and caught 5-4 and 4-10 rainbows on a tungsten head hares' ear. Blanket weed around the edges made playing and landing the fish "interesting", let's say....

Around 12:30 I moved to the carrier bank of the middle lake and, remembering Neil's other comment about good fish holding way out in the middle, I fished blind, long casts with a goldhead damsel using the quickest figure of 8 I can manage. I was glad I did, because by about 2pm I'd had rainbows of 12-10 and 7-0...which I was very pleased with.

Not an easy day, 4 fish from no more than 6 or 7 takes and plenty of observed fish showed no interest at all in my flies. The water is clear, and while perhaps the fishery is not in its very best trim because of the relative lack of weed and the surface scum, the rewards are there if you give it your best shot and fish hard.

Went on Saturday, got down there for about 9.30 and wandered to the first lake. There seemed a fair amount of week in the lake and there were 2 decent rainbows and a couple of disinterested but large browns to target. Second cast and the larger of the rainbows charged up at my sinking fly from a long way off. at the last and i do mean last second it thought better of it, and bolted off. No matter what i threw at it after that, i got not a flicker of interest!

Wandered onto Lake 2 and there was a LOT of surface weed, rendering about a third of the lake unfishable! I saw a very large brownie and spent the best part of 2 hours fishing for him whenever he came into the little gap i could get a decent cast at. no interest whatsoever until i put a white lure on, cast it out and let it rest on the bottom. as he came round i ripped the fly off the bottom and stripped as fast as i could. the brown went berserk and chased the fly grabbing at it but missing and taking some detritus off the bottom instead. he came again and smashed the fly. I got a pull, and he was gone further up the lake was a nice trout under some trees, i love this spot as it always holds a good fish, but the cast was a nightmare!. THe fish followed a few times but really wanted it static. I managed to cast over a twig leavng the fly suspended a couple of feet down, sure enough, fish came round and sucked it in. A really tight battle ensured as there was lots of weed about but finally i got him. he looked every inch a double, but 9.4 was what the scales said!

On to lake 3 and again the top end was unfishable due to surface weed i saw one good fish under there but didn't risk a cast so wandered up to the very top where it's fenced off and spent an hour or so after another cracking brown with no success. managed a decent 8.4 from there though.

Back to lake 2 and out of nowhere a massive rainbow materialised. he was a good 18lb but disappeared before i could get a cast in. (i was under a tree) I wandered round to the other bank and the light (and weed) was terrible but finally saw him. Flicked a cast out and he hunted around for it but didn't take another cast blind into a shimmer on the surface saw the water 'hump' as soon as the fly landed and the line tweaked. I struck and had the big fish on! Straight into a huge weed bed which he proceeded to tow round the bottom of the lake. It was only a matter of time really, but sure enough, the hook pulled leaving me with about 20lb of weed rather than 20lb of trout.! Slightly gutted but it was always going to be a 'mare from that spot!

Back to lake 1 and a couple of cursory casts at a (by now) spooked biggie before getting a 5.5lb brown and calling it a day.

Great day all in, 2 big doubles hooked, more seen and plenty of chances. shame about the weed though.

Sounds a great day out , shame for your loss of the 'big one'

Never having visited Avington......

What condition were the trout in?
Are they just big stockies that loose weight once in the lake or do they mend and feed naturally until they are outwitted?

Can fish survive for a long period before capture or do they get caught on day one in the lake?

The Avington trout are big stockies, put into a fairly small water and caught in fairly short order. That said, they're in good condition, generally, and fight very well. Once they've been in a while they wise up very quickly, and some of the 'resident' browns can be almost impossible. Teh one i lost on Saturday gave me one chance in 2 hours or more of intense pressure!

I fish Avon Springs quite a lot, the fishery is not subject to quite the constant and fierce angling pressure that Avington is, and Avon Springs trout certainly get on to natural food and silver up nicely. They lose their stockie body fat as well; a semi-resident Avon springs 5 or 6 pounder in winter is a lovely fish.

Even at Avington, there are places where a trout can hide away from anglers, specially on the lake furthest away from the lodge with its out of bounds and the deep water where the second and third lakes meet. Also way out in the middle of the second lake, I have no illusions about the element of luck in the capture of my 12 pounder last Friday even though I'd seen fish there.

I can understand the desire to outwit a particular fish ( specially if you can see its response )
The closest i get on the ressie is if I cast to a surface feeding fish and it takes.

To spend 2 hrs trying to outwit a visible fish , unreal and what patience.

What do you do with all these large dead trout or can you release them ?
