Default Which side do you wind on ?

I have a French friend who swears blind I should have my winder on the left side of my reel, as he does, we are both right handed. I wind on the right of my reel and would find it really strange with my winder handles on the left.

What side do you work on, what is the 'norm' ?

As you play fish with rod in your right hand, your friend is indeed correct, you should be reeling with your left.

You get used to it, trust me.

Best regards
Jim

My mate fishes cack-handed as well he swears blind that I am wrong.

I hold my rod with right hand, so it makes sense to reel with the left; otherwise you have to pass the rod to the other hand before you can reel in.

Hold the rod in my right hand reel with my left, thought that's what all right handers do. Makes sense to me when playing a fish to be using my strongest arm to hold the rod.

Right hand for rod, left for reel winding.

I think the best hand to wind with is the one you practice the most with. I'm right handed but wind with my left.

Stranger and stranger.....

I've been fishing for years, I always play fish with the rod in my left hand and reel with my right..... this has never come up before......

You bleedin' Poms!!

You should be strong enough to fight a fish with either arm

Personally, I cast with my right and fight with my left whilst winding with the right.

Perhaps that seems weird but you will seldom find a Saffa doing owt different

I understand that it makes sense to do so the other way around but I think it is what makes sense in one's head and, most likely, how you grew up doing so and we always used our conventional deep sea rods that way, fought with the left and wound with the right

I am a right hander only!! I can only wind in using the left hand! I have a Pridex right hand wind reel. that I use on the left, winding against the light drag.

I'd say if your right handed then you use a left hand wind.
