Default Trout & Wind Knots

What is this fascination that trout seem to have for watching anglers untie wind-knots.

An hour's casting with barely a sign of a fish, but when you stop casting to untangle, they seem to come from all over to rise and whelm in front of you.

As soon as the line is tidied (not so easy when your fingers are trembling with excitement at the sight of rising fish) and you're ready to cast again, they're gone

Hi leonroskilly

Yes, trout do this all the time.I find that conditions change so for instance fishing on top is inappropriate. By the time I've changed leader and flies to another tatic the condititions change back. Another frustrating one is where fishing is quiet with no rises. The minute you pack up to go fish start to show themselves.

I fully expect to see a 36 lb salmon go past in a pink tutu on rollerskates one day while I am trying to retrieve a fly from a tree

BTW these, errrr... 'wind knots'; are they the same ones that happen on still days when there isn't a breath of wind?

Trout like watching you struggle. The wind knott obviously puts them off, so they decide to watch you solve the problem, but they soon get bored, so when you are sorted, they go.
Same in changing tactics. They've had their first course by the time you realize what they are on, when you change over, they are then on their second course.

Yep whenever I change flies, casts, stop to untangle or any reason for not being able to get a fly in the water they come and rise right in front of me
I sometimes wonder if there is a trout equivalent of this forum where they discuss the best techniques for winding up anglers

whenever I'm untangling a wind knot I always remind myself of something I read ...they would be more accurately named bad casting knots

Don't you believe it casting wind knots is an art form in itself, there's nothing more beautiful than a well spaced bead line of six or seven wind knots, been practicing their formation for years.

I can never work out why the wind blows more down my side of the river than my fishing buddies He never gets any wind knots.
As for Flies in trees this same buddy cast his leader straight over an overhanging branch once and a bloody trout leapt out of the water and grabbed the fly that was dapping the surface of the water He said it was Intentional

Knew I shouldn't have let you have a go on my rod last night. I didn't mind the knots in my leader, it was the knots in my line that took some undoing
