Default Fly fishing Scotland, Guide or no guide?

Hi all, I hope you all don't mind if I use this as a bit of market research!!

I am thinking of moving to the Solway area of Dumfries & Galloway to run fly fishing courses, workshops, casting lessons and all things fly fishing. Hopefully encouraging wives to take it up (with the benefit of a lady instructor), but also running workshops which are more oriented towards women such as Wool spinning, knitting, all textile related courses, cooking etc.

If you were planning to come to Scotland for a fishing holiday would you be interested in this option, staying with us on a B&B basis, based in this area where there are a number of decent brown trout lochs and rivers, or would you opt for a different option?

Any replies gratefully received.

Regards

Sue

Hi Sue,

I might if I were in Scotland. Ive been planning a family holiday to Scotland for about 10 years now, in an attempt to get in a bit of scottish fishing. However my wife always puts her foot down and we end up in a villa in the Alrgarve.

Therefore for the last few years I have kept my fishing trips soley fishing and try not to involve the family. Dont get me wrong I still take the kids fishing but my wife isnt interested at all.

I like your username by the way.

I have a calander on the wall of my fly tying den with the very same name.

Sue,
I do take my family on my Fishing trip's, or more so our summer holidays always end up around vast Lough's, for some strange reason.
Now once the kid's get a bit of recreation and the wife get's to do something she enjoy's, the Fishing for me get's easier.
But as your idea suggest, you are doing other activities alongside the fishing, this from my point of view, (having read an add with that suggestion) would be very family orientated, which would be down our ally.

We have being to scotland before, residing in balloch, beside Lough lomand, and it was great, i was a guest in the local club house for the two weeks, and the rest of the family enjoyed daily trips to the highlands, and shopping days out, and the walks we took were fantastic.

I think your on to a winner their, and if your up and running,I would certainly go for it as my son and daughter are my junior fly fishing partner's, and you could teach my wife how to cook.So book me in

Regard's
Dave

Hi Sue

I am getting Women in Waders for Christmas but just the one calendar!

In answer to your question do you think that you could offer more to an angler than he or she might be able to achieve using a map and with a little knowledge of fishing?

I don't know but I wish you luck.

WIW,

Appreciate where you are coming from but as one who works in Market Research your sample of views on this forum will be too small to give you a valid analysis. Yes, some on here will be acceptable to your business plan but others will not. The sample is small and self selecting therefore unlikely to be stastically valid.

For instance, in my 60's I prefer to keep fishing and my wife on different planes, she is welcome to come with me to selected venues where she knows the fellow anglers and their wives. All of the lassies are welcome to fish, but few do so. So they do their own thing cookery, embroidery etc and nought wrong with that. My own personal experience with a non-fishing wife is that I can only manage 2 days solid fishing at a time before I have to revert to making sure she has her own time and is having a holiday herself.

Where does that take your initial question? If you are intending to set up a mixed angling and activities business which are more oriented to others ( pls note not solely women ), I suggest that you contact the the local Enterprise Council with whom you will be able to discuss your plans and they will maybe able to do some real , valid market research.

All the best with your plans.

Womeninwaders, I think I watched a workshop at Kenmore a year ago, where you did instruct with a blindfold on you client, quite successfully I might add( you might remember my rude Jokes at dinner). But back to the question I would definitely not be interested in knitting but I be very keen on your rivers and hill lochs and even a bit of casting tuition. Good luck with your venture and any one wishing casting tuition could not get better instruction.

Hi Joe,
yes I do remember you, dinner has never been the same since!! thanks for your kind comments, there is nothing quite like having your primary sense removed for improving your casting by feel.

also, thanks to others for input, I am also doing market research from other angles as well, and obviously will be updating my websites of which there will eventually be 3 linked ones.

I am hoping that the local arts agencies will be on my side as well, as they are trying to encourage arts & crafts in this area.

I also have a huge felted nomadic tent which will be used for textile workshops and kids parties/sleepovers. I am sure there must be MILLIONS of folks out there who have always wanted to spend a night in a genuine Iranian tent

I'd have to say no on several counts.

As others have expressed, I also prefer to keep my fishing separate from my domestic affairs, and that is the way the wife likes it also.

The textile side of things holds no interest for me or Mrs Goose.

The guiding side fills me with dread. I can't think of something worse than having someone with me telling me where and how to fish. Sub-consciously, that's probably another reason why I keep the wife and my fishing separate.

I wish your endeavour well, but it sounds like you are targeting a very small section of what is already a very small community. I'd keep the fishing and the textile thing distinctly separate.
