Default oddest technique!

Talking to a guy working on next doors garden he mentioned that he fishes the loch. So I asked him if he uses bait or fly expecting the usual swimfeeder/maggot reply so when he said fly I asked him if he had any tips, always on the lookout for local knowledge and he told me his technique...

he uses a bubble float with a 3 fly cast on it, ok I've heard of this before and was switching off as he's not talking about "proper" fly fishing until he finished the sentence ...with a small maggot on each fly

He reckons he catches lots like this - 36 fish in one night

It did leave me wondering why put the flies on at all? Why not just put the maggots on normal hooks?

In case you're wondering, swimfeeders and floats aren't allowed on the loch but that doesn't stop anyone from using them

I have heard of people using bubble floats with normal coarse gear and casting out artificial flies. A way of people to carry on fly fishing if they injured arms etc.

Hi Euan
The whole point is that we catch fish on fly cast from a rod. It's a highly skilful process and a sporting way to catch fish. If we wanted to cheat or catch fish with maggots or worms we'd become coarse anglers.

True dedicated fly fishermen don't cheat unless in competitions.

A team of Irish road workers went into a tackle shoip in Lancs just before returning home.
One of them asked what was the biggest hook they had in the shop.

When shown the sea fishing hook the bloke said no I am looking for one about six inches long.
What the hell you fishing for asked the shop owner.
Salmon said the Irishman.
What line do you use in a six inch hook asked the shopkeeper
None said the Roadworker, we just lie on the bank and plunge the hook into a passing fish.

It's a highly effective way of removing trout from stillwaters.beloved of poachers at night.
It's a modern way of fishing an otter board.without the board of course.
I have tried it and can vouch for it's effectivness.
Well know by the residents of central Scotland.
I have a big box full of bubble floats found on litter patrol round our loch in the winter.

Bubble float, flee and maggot; oh, my youthful memories of Loch Glow and "The Meedies"

Two Irishmen walking along a road meet two friends carrying a large salmon. "How did you catch that" one asked?"
"Well said the Irishman with the salmon I leaned over the bridge and Pat held my ankles and when a fish swam by I grabbed its tail."
"We must try that" the two Irishmen said. So they went to a bridge and one leaned over while the other held his ankles.
"Can you see anything yet?" one said to the other "Yes" he confirmed "For St. Pat's sake pull me up quickly there's a train coming."

Kilsyth the home of er..inventive fishing techniques, the Kilsyth minnin etc,

im wondering where the flies come in a bubble float and maggot would be rather simpler to cast on a spinning rod, or did i miss something.

I fished that way for years on the Barrhead dams when I was a youth. Few people fished any other way. The maggot was an added attraction but wasn't really necessary.

Fishing with a fly rod was seen as quite a coarse way of fishing. "Watter lashers" was one of the more polite ways of referring to those strange people who couldn't cast more than 50ft or so and whipped the water to a fine creamola foam. We hated the fly rod brigade as they disturbed every fish for miles around.
