Default soft hackled wets

iv got a wee trip coming up on Wednesday to a river that iv never fished before and I want to try out some upstream wet fly fishing. normally il fish wets across and down but after doing a lot of reading it makes much more sense across and up or in a dead drift. my real question is what flies I should be using. I was thinking classic spider patterns, march brown, invicta, black pennell and some other soft hackled wets. what does everyone think and what tips would you give to someone approaching trout like this for the first time

thanks

gerry
