Default Otters

Face to face with an otter on the Calder at Elland W. Yorks this morning

Should I be reporting this to the EA?

I've not heard of otters on the Calder before.

I don't mind sharing my fishing but maybe there needs to be adjustment to stocking if there's significant predation

Wouldn't bother mate. It might move off anyway. Dog otters cavor large areas and might be away tomorrow.
See it as a great sign that your water is in good order. Dont grudge it a fish or two and to be honest it is more likely to eat eels and frogs than the trout.

Quite happy to share the fish

I see at as a massive privilege to be up close and personal with such a charming and iconic species.

Beautiful sight on any river and you should feel privileged to have one on yours.
Really lovely to watch them hunting a stretch of water. I could be wrong but as far as i know their diet consists mainly of crustaceans , eels, frogs. Otters may also occasionally prey on birds, rabbits, and rodents. Will take the odd fish but wont clean out the river. There have been otters on my local river for as many years as I have fished and probably well before, as has been said its a sign that the river is in good health.

Yes that's right, there's a predator on the loose on your favourite fishery. I know, let's stock it to the hilt. Enough ready available food to consider constructing a holt nearby and amply feeding a full litter. I love otters and they remind me that man doesn't own the rights to survival.
