Default Advice : Fast action rods

Hi guys,

I am looking for a fast action rod no more than a 9ft 6 in length and no more than a 7# and would like some advice on makes. I have a greys grxi 5/6# and that is lovely and light so something around the same as i just cant get on with it

As i am unemployed the cheaper the better as long as its not a flextec as i have a cdx66 which they claim to be a fast action and is not and also have a crx88 8/9 which is to heavy for me.

All advice will be taken on board and if anyone has got a good fast action rod for sale please pm.

Many Thanks

Graham

Doubt you'll get much cheaper than here

Shakespeare Special Offer Trion Fly Rods + Free Line Worth £19.99 › Shakespeare Rods › Fishing Rods › Fishing Tackle › Page 1

(They are described as fast, but not perhaps as fast as some)

I prefer the newer XT but they'll set you back another £20 or so.

Both, and I like them. If you take into account the freebie line with the Trion offer, you are getting a rod for around £10 - (the lines are ok)

However, the tips on several of the Trions have broken on me, without any obvious reason (i.e stepping on them) but then, I have a bad habit of hitting my rod tip with the fly and I am both clumsy and hard on my rods.
In fairness to JN, they replaced the rod without question but on one occasion I got the impression that broken tips on the Trion were not that unheard of.

Unlike you, I'm going the other way and have just bought a second hand B&W which has a much softer, through action which I prefer.

I think the Trions are good value for money when fishing (the XT, I think got best in class under £100 in T&S,) but maybe there is a question mark over their longevity

thanks again Bill,

So the best thing to do would be to buy another rod and keep hold of my greys then just in case. The reason for the fast action is until i get the cast and timing down to a tee because at the minute its terrible lol. All wrist and no fore arm lol.

The best thing to do would be to stick to the Greys, and spend the money you would otherwise have spent on another rod, on a casting lesson(s) with a qualified pro. No reason why you shouldn't be able to cast perfectly well with your current rod.
If your rod really is totally inappropriate for you, a qualified instructor will tell you straight away and can almost certainly advise you what would suit you.
There is also probably a casting club near you where for a couple of pounds you can chat to other fishermen and try out their rods and pick up tips.
Put up a thread on here asking for qualified instructors in your area and whether there is a casting club

PS
To control your wrist, try tucking your rod butt into the cuff of your coat.

Hi Bill,

I have been to the glasgow casting club on thursday night and also had some tuition with a qualified instructor who said that the greys was a bit soft and he is going to bring a couple of rods to the next session. I did however like as i said try out a guideline exp3 and that was fab to work with.

I tried out a Flextec cdx66 9ft 6/7 today and it just kept falling apart i put birthday candle wax on it to stop this happening and it still did it so not impressed with that either.

Not had a great day fishing on the banks today only had 2takes all day.

Well, I'm not going to argue with a qualified pro if he says that the rod is too soft for you.

I pretty well taught myself as a kid with a 13ft greenheart, and they don't come much softer - or heavier One day, I had no fly rod so fished with a 6ft solid fibreglass spinning rod.(couldn't cast far, but far enough). I was also watching a demonstration at the Scottish Game Fair, where he put out the same length of line just using the rod tip as he had with the full rod.
My point being that the basics of casting are the same for all rods and most rods will cast well enough for you to catch fish , but you have to adjust your timing to an individual rod.

On the other hand, if you aren't enjoying yourself fishing because you plain don't like your rod, then changing the rod is a better alternative than giving up fishing.

If the weather up your way is anything like down here (sunny and still) then you probably did pretty well even to get a couple of tugs!
