Default Some fisheries just don't help themselves.....

So we are all hearing about how tough it is for fisheries at the moment. we should all be supporting them more.....etc..etc...

Well i have to say that i find many don't help themselves.

I've just come back from a two week break and came across Blakewell Trout Fishery in Devon. I had permission for a couple of hours fishing from the trouble & strife and went to see what permit options were available.

I didn't want any fish as i was on holiday and only intended to fish for 2 hours at most. I explained this to the member of staff and was told quite sternly that the only option available to me was a 2 fish kill ticket for £26. What a rip off.

Given this fisheries location, they must get alot of holiday anglers in a similar situaton to mine. I might well have caught my 2 fish in 10 minutes and that would be my fishing done.

I asked why they didn't allow catch & release and was told that they were a working farm so therefore it wasn't allowed........ Oh, they kindly offered to take the fish off me if i was lucky enough to catch....how kind!

The member of staff was also quite rude.

I have come across this situation quite a few times and i just wonder how much trade fisheries lose becasue they simply don't have any flexable ticket options.

I wish more places would cater for the angler who simply want a couple of hours fishing..........it looked like a lovely place and i felt like i had missed out........

I am not keen on trout as a table fish so I won't fish any water that is not catch and release. So nest time I'm in Devon Bakewell is definitely off my list, if you Are treated badly vote with your feet and leave, there are always other fisheries more deserving of custom.

Absolute rip-off.
However what gets me most is the rude, indifferent attitude of certain fisheries. I am sure that they must get bored out of their skulls being asked the same "stupid" questions, over and over again but that's their job.

£26 Catch and Kill only???

I take it these were plain old stockies too?

That would get you 8 fish on Hanningfield and C&R after or C&R all day if you wanted. Even Chigboro allows C&R after 2 killed for that price.

Did you not advise them that you were the (in)famous ChickenFish from Fly Forums???

I am more impressed that the Trouble and Strife allowed you off for a few hours.....didnt you say it was a wee Honeymoon??

Plain an simple £26 for two fish only is expensive, very expensive indeed. Ouch!

Along the lines of "you're the 20th person today that I have told there is no demand for such a ticket?"

I do agree it is a problem, especially when on holiday with only a 2-3 hour exit visa from SWMBO when the only tickets are full day or late evening.

There's no excuse if the staff were rude but why ask for a catch and release ticket when the fishery in question doesn't offer such.
Do you really expect them to change just to suit you.

Problem is that like a lot of tourist destinations they want your money when you are there and could'nt give a toss if you come back or not as the next lot will be along soon!
I just remembered why I stopped going to the Lakes. (actually, thats a lie, its why I stopped spending money in the Lakes!!)

Thats ridiculous!

its not as though the guy was asking for a cheaper price on beer just because he's goin to drink half the can!

He's asking a ('normal' ) guy if he can do a bit of fluff chucking for a couple of hours without paying a stupid amount of money!

Its good to name and shame anyway chickenfish, well done!
