Default Which fly

folks
i am a member of a 7 acre scottish loch. The water has recently been stocked with rainbows and i am finding it difficult to locate the fish. during most of june i have barely seen fish rising Older members tell me that they are bottom feeding in weed on beetles. If this is the case apart from buying a beetle imitation and fishing it as low as i can is there any other advice on how to tackle this problem.

apologies if this is a daft question which i have answered myself im new

No matter where you are you cant go wrong with a damsel hothead on a floating or intermedite pulled slow..
It must have caught me over 100 rainbows already this season including a 9 and 10lber the year before
Not bad for one fly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom

Hi Scott
If these newly intoduced rainbows haven't been seen then there could be a number of reasons.
1. The weather has been hot and sunny and trout tend to go down to deeper water a steady temperature.
2. There may not be a hatch of flies to bring the trout up to feed.Sometimes when there's a breeze feeding fish are hidden.
3. Trout may indeed be feeding on insect life below the water.

One thing for sure the trout are still there all you need to do is find the location and depth they are at and fish accordingly. As an experiment try a Di5 line, let it bottom and strip back a blob or a Cats booby. Gradually let it sink less and less between each retieve. Chances are you will hit newly stocked fish at some level.

If the fish really are on the bottom, then you could try boobies on a sinking line.
Try a 6ft leader with a booby on the point and one on a dropper 3ft away. Use a fast sinking line. Let the line sink to the bottom (this can take a while) and then retrieve the boobies using a draw and pause retrieve.

however, just because they are not showing doesn't mean they won't come up to a dry. If nothing is happening down below, try a hopper on the top.

(I agree with the previous suggestions and I find a montana often works well with stockies.)
