Default cracked ferrule

Hi everybody,

Just a quick question for anyone that had a similar problem. I have just noticed couple of hareline cracks about 1/4 of an inch on female ferrule on the bottom middle section of my few months old guideline fario. Should I be worried about this or is the tread whipping going to stop it from progressing down the blank. Guideline charges 50€ + postage for replacement section

Cheers.

That's bad on a 'few months old' quality rod. I'd say that is a manufacturing defect and not liable for any charges

Are you sure it is the blank that has cracked and not just hairline cracks in the varnish?

THis seems to be a trend, not only with guidelines (as a matter of fact never seen one with a cracked ferrule) but i get a few people in the shop with a similar problem.. Usually it is caused by casting a rod with one of the ferrules a bit loose.. Check the inside of the female ferrule with a good torch, but if you can see the cracks in the epoxy it almost always is caused by the blank being cracked...

+1 to what Jerry just said. This is particularly true with some manufacturers 2-hander rods. Ongoing 'debate' is 'wax,' 'tape' (the connections together) or both.

Just from personal observation if the 'male' part of the ferrule is polished (rather than sanded finish) the sections can easily move if not properly put together (start just a bit out of lineament and push down and twist as you line them up.

Spey casts usually make it worse true, fred what kind of wax do you use for that..

Sorry for the small hijack

Right you are Jerry, it's the 'torqueing' action of many spey casts that does the job. As to wax, any un-scented candle wax will usually work. Know a couple of fellows who swear by bees wax. That said, if you do use a 'soft wax' you DO want to wipe as much of that off as you can when you take the rod apart. The soft wax will collect dirt too easy for my taste.

On that note, even if you rarely see any reference to it, it's also a good idea to take a "Q-tip" and clean the left over wax out of the 'female' part of the ferrule.

Thanks Fred, but yeah i know about those, i thought you spey cast guys had some magic stuff.. Maybe it is because the rods seem to be getting thinner that they tend to work loose more easily..

I love to do underhand single handed casts but the loose ferrulles are driving me nuts..

Jerry, do the twist and push bit. If still a problem go for the tape (I've never been a wax man, personal preference there only.) To properly tape (stretchy electrical tape works just fine), put two strips (across from each other so you've got at least 3" of coverage up/down the ferrule. Then sprile (sp?)wind tape up/down over those. If its tight, the sections aren't going anywhere.
