Default Advice

Hi guys,

Hope someone can point me in the right direction as i am spending way to much money on tackle i do not need.

I only started fly fishing last season and i have 4 rods 5 reels god knows how many lines i have bought.

What i am looking for is someone to guide me on a good rod and reel and line so i don't spend any more money.

All advice will be taken on board tight lines

Graham

Where do you fish most rivers or stillwaters?,the rod reel and line combo in your sig is fine for small/medium stillwaters possibly add a #7 rod for ressies etc and your good to go.There are loads of good reels/lines and rods out there,me i use Rio floating lines and Airflo sinkers,my reels are from Sonik and Caimore.I use two rods for stillwaters a Greys 9'6'' G-Tec #6 for dries and nymphs and a Sage 9'6'' RPL+ #7 for lures

Neil

Sorry i don't fish rivers

That's true or at least partly true ie you may need a good drag at some point and its nice to own decent tackle that wont let you down when you need it most

Rods - Steve Parkes (AtomSix)Fly Fishing Forums - View Profile: AtomSix

Reels: sunkistbob Fly Fishing Forums - View Profile: sunkistbob Superb reels at unbelievable prices.

Lines - Steve Parkes or PitsfordPirate Fly Fishing Forums - View Profile: PitsfordPirate I haven't used Steve lines yet but if I know Steve he won't sell anything he wouldn't use himself and if the lines are anything like the standard of his rods I'm sure they will be bloody good.

Alright then, what have you bought already besides the list in your sig?

Let's see that and then we can explain what is for what...

Graham,

The 5/6 in your profile is just fine. Don't buy another rod/reel. That rod will be fine for just about anything you want to do. You'd be better spent to get a casting lesson or two and/or a day on the water with a teaching guide.

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Graham,

You sound exactly like me.

Last year, I bought a cheap fly rod on ebay for no reason that I can think of except one glass of red wine too many.

Then of course I needed a reel, line, flies, tippets and ....... well loads of other stuff.

Pretty soon I couldn't remember what fly rods, reels and lines I had amongst all my other coarse and sea gear! (So, I had to clear another corner as tackle takes over the living accommodation in the house).

And my fly collection has easily outstripped my collection of lures, spoons and jerkbaits many times over!

Well, everything had to be tried so that I could (say) get a feel for the difference in a 3/4wt outfit compared to a 7/8 outfit.

I'm now at the stage of being able to tell whether the cheap stuff I bought was value for money, or simply **** to be replaced by better, and lusting after rods and reels way beyond what my fishing budget will stand

Reading through the advice and other information posted on here has been a big help in getting to grips with things.

And at some stage I've still got to grips with salt-water fly-fishing, fishing from boats, and rivers and for grayling and pike and ........

Graham

I have an old spare cage for the GRXI reel you can have if you still have the cassettes, I work in Clydebank so can easily catch up with you if you would like it.

As for lessons I can recommend John Milne ( ten to one ) on the forum, he is an excellent instructor and a few lessons will help you get the most out of your current set up

Johns website is http://www.flycastingscotland.co.uk/
