Default Trout on mussel

Hi
On Saturday I was watching a guy fishing above the upper wier at Addingham, Ok he was bait fishing but he had had 2 x 5lb trout out during the afternoon and whilst I watched he one at least 7lb, it was a monster. On asking him what he was using he showed be a box of mussels he had bought from the fish counter at Morrisons Supermarket for a £1.
On Saturday evening he asked me to come back to the same spot he wanted to show me an experiment he was conducting.
He lined up 6 mussels just on the waters edge, we stepped back and watched. After about 5 minutes a bow wave appeared about 2 yards from the bank and headed straight for the mussels. An extremely large brown trout crashed onto the bank and devoured a mussel. Not long after it happened again and again till all mussels had gone. We tried the experiment a bit higher up the river and it happened again.
Question is can the trout smell them or taste them in the river.
I have never seen trout so big in the Wharfe.

Cheers

Steve

Wow! sounds exciting, I know what im dipping my flies in

I have heard that Trout are more dependant on sight rather than smell but this surely proves wrong

Interesting story

Were they still in the shell, raw, or in garlic butter?

It's a much under appreciated bait and one of my favourites in the summer for Plaice and Bass and in the winter for Cod and Whiting

Don't suppose any salmon had a sniff at them?

Makes a change to the "there on the snails" line.

Got plagued by trout (and eels-yuk) whilst using prawns for salmon twice last week, the river was heavily coloured after storms, trout have a very good sense of smell like most fish, and so do salmon, hooked 7, landed 5.Happy days

Heathen, bloody heathen!

smell senses in trout and salmon are awesome!

Hence the effectiveness of prawns and worms in high coloured water.

Mussels out of shell, have a very high oily content, which no doubt spreads throught the water, thus attracting the fish.
Never tried them for trout though.
very effective for flounders and cod though.
regards
bert
