Default Dark Floaters

I have noticed that there is an ever increasing number of dark floating lines on the market.

I've seen a few anglers using them on the river recently and my question is why use a dark floater as opposed to the conventional white or hi-vis colours?

Hi Bruce

Hope your well....it's been a while. Thanks for the reply.......but I'm still not sure what the reason is for introducing a dark floater?

Hello Bugsy,
I see it as simply marketing, companies trying to get you to buy new lines. Maybe they are just creating or catering to the newest fad or trend... I dunno

I have watched 2 nearly equally skilled, excellent fishermen work a river side by side and they both had about the same number of takes. One had fluro orange the other dark olive, they even laughed about the colour controversy when I asked them. The best of the two even brags about owning a cheap rod & reel.
That said I think a dull line may help when fishing over spooky high pressured fish... that and I don't like loud fluorescent lines.

I would seriously question the logic of dark line for spooky fish......drag in a fly maybe but line colour?...... noooooo. In all river disciplines I thought it was a key factor that you watched the behaviour of the line?!!

Bugsy! How are you matey?

I'm not sure that line colour is too important with regard to spooking fish, although out of preference I tend to go for dull, muted colours. What I do think is that lines shouldn't be too shiny. I'm pretty sure that something flashing to and fro over their heads, glinting in the sunshine, is more likely to put them down.

I like the Rio lines, the Gold, LT etc as they're muted shades of green and tan and have quite a matt finish.

Just to put a few memorys to work .
back in the 70s Aircel made a mahogany brown line ,,I did 'nt own one of those but got a similar DT from mackenzie Philps ,around the same time Alan Pearson (mr big fish at the time) was promoting a black floating line .
Later on had a very dark green Floater from Masterline which was my go too wet fly line ,not a great floater but a very slow sink tip.Today I like dull coloured lines for drifty boats and river fishing ,
Yesterday needs must was up on Walthamstowe ressers with a vivid orange line from Mike Barrio ,at one level of light I was thinking one of those dark lines would have stood out better ,this thinking back to the days when i would Cove style nymph fish with a two rod set up
Summing up these dull lines have a place in my armoury but I would not be with out my vivid lines .

The late Dick Walker had a theory (80's I think) that white & other hi-viz lines could, inder certain conditions scare fish with "line flash" whilst being cast in the area above where on is about to cast.

At that time. AirCell used to do a mahogany coloured line & I think that was about the darkest floater around. I know people who bought 444's & cold dyed them black, they found them much more successful at Chew & Blagdon than the standard peach ones from bank & boat.

It's simply a marketing ploy I reckon. Start a debate and you'll always get a number of anglers who think a dark floater's better.

I think, logically, that a fish looking up will find it more difficult to see a white line against the light. That's why fishes's bellies are white, for camouflage.

I don't think that fish associate a fly line, landing several feet away, with a fly, so it hardly matter what the colour is. I mean they make fluorescent orange lines don't they??? Constant casting and the line landing on the water must surely spook fish though.
